Suggested wood to pair with Zebrawood

Hi GreenGA

I think using Zebrano as the main wood will be charged with to much line. Vertical ,horizontal line from the frame plus the grain and add some end grain to this. [eek]

Brice had a good suggestion by using a lighter grain design wood and add some Zebrano.

I suggest Maple for the light grain figure and stain it to match the light color of the Zebrano. If this goes in a cellar I will use cedar.

Padauk is OK if you have the right species, the African Padauk I have used turns very dark with age, African Mahogany is close to South American Mahogany and will darken with age.  Unless you want a deep contrast between the woods, I would still suggest Port Oxford Cedar or White Oak ( a favorite of mine).

I would consider pairing it with Wenge. You are using a wood with a bold contrast. The darkness of the Wenge, IMHO would enhance this contrast.

I agree on wenge, it would compliment zebra wood very well. I've done that combo before and it turned out great. If I can find some pics ill post them

Originally I was working on a Bubinga bar top, but didn't quite have enough width. To make up the width I cut the Bubinga down the middle and inserted a five inch band of Zebrawood. I dyed the Zebrawood a little to warm it up. It looks amazing.

I've found padauk doesn't change colour if it's sealed.
Keeps its dramatic red colour.
But exposed to air, it oxidises to a dark brown, as you say.

Andaman Padauk stays a nice brownish color over time.
