Suggestions needed: what material to finish porch ceiling with

I have a customer who wants me to upgrade his outdoor "porch". It's a 12' by 24' bricked patio that is attached to the house and has a nice new roof on it. The construction is 2x8s or similar in the ceiling and he wants them covered to upgrade the looks. The sides and edges of the roof and the posts would be wrapped with white aluminum. So what I need is a good material to do the ceiling with. There are lots of possibilities but all seem to come up a little short in some category. For example:

1. Drywall - easily put up and finished. It can look like a solid ceiling and be painted. But it's outdoors...so would it be ok or would green (moisture resistant) be ok?

2. Plywood sheets. Problem here is what to do with the inevitable gaps where the sheets meet. Most folks use 2" wood trim strips to cover but I've always thought those looked pretty tacky. Perhaps my client won't. But decent paintable ply isn't cheap.

3. Plastic 4x8 sheets like is sometimes used in cheap shower surrounds here. Nailing through it is ugly and will adhesive really keep it on? Gotta cover those gaps too and the plastic trim pieces often don't fit well.

As the King of Siam said, "et cetera, et cetera, et cetera".

How would you do this?

How about t&g bead board?

Very typical on a porch ceiling and gives you a more interesting look than ply or drywall, and it's easy to put up.  Paint or stain and it will endure for quite a while.

I agree with Neil.  Very common option for this application and not too much money.  TOH has a step-by-step article with some good tips.
This Old House T&G beadboard

You can buy the beadboard in 12ft lengths as well, but you have to look around.  Just make sure you stick with something stable for exterior applications (PVC or ply or hardwood) not the MDF stuff.

Flat ply is too plain (may as well leave it as-is imho), and drywall is a no-no.
