Supply box

Several months ago my dad asked me to build a box to store his gun cleaning supplies. I put it off for a bit and he never mentioned it again. That really left the ball in my court. In between a couple paid jobs I decided to start on the project. I rarely work on pieces this small, most of my stuff is furniture and cabinetry, but the change of pace was fun.

I tried something a little different - I raised the panels on the table saw, all the other past panels I have made I have used a router table. The pieces, both mitered and straight, are joined using about a bajillion of the smallest (4 mm?) dominos.

The wood is sapele, which I found twists the second it goes through the saw, but is otherwise very pleasant to work with. Luckily, I don't have to do the finish work. My dad is a real artist when it comes to finishing, he spent years refinishing high-end gun stocks as a side business, so I'm positive he will do a  great job.

Maybe I could call it his Father's Day gift, since I'm 43 and he's 73, it's a little trickier to buy him a gift.

Looks great!.  The frame and panel construction and raised panels work well on this small chest.  Nice work!

Will you get a picture to share with us after your father finishes it?  I bet it's really going to look spectacular.

Thanks for sharing.

Absolutely - I really like it when he does the finish work, he's far more meticulous than I am.

Very very nice. I find it quite different to work smaller projects, if you are used to cabinetmaking and furniture.

It looks stunning, must have taken lots of hours.

what are the dimensions? if you said already please excuse my ignorance, i'm getting old (mid 40's) and my memory in the fridge at about half past two on the wednesday... ooh, what are these buttons for...

it's a cool piece, looks like it could easily be scaled up to make a nice storage trunk for toys... even kids toys for that matter!
