Surfix Shelf Life

I've been searching high and low for guidance on storing an opened jug of Surfix. Specifically, the 5L refill. I asked Festool how long to expect, how to best store, and what to look for as a sign it is no longer good.

I suspect there isn't really a shelf-life if stored in ideal conditions like a cool basement. Anyone have any go bad as described?

Anyway, sharing for the hive mind.

Hello,
Thank you for contacting Festool. The Surfix oil is made up of a combination of linseed oil and waxes, this solution should be stored away from extreme temperatures as these conditions will shorten the shelf life of the product when stored. Once opened the product does not have an amount of time of shelf life expectancy, but it should be good for a few years (2-3 years) when stored in a temperature controlled environment. The oil separates from the waxes when it sits for some time but can be mixed back together for use. Once the mixture is not able to bond when mixed, then this will be an indication that the solution is no longer usable.

Best Regards,

In case you want to prolongate 'shelf life' of the contents of opened containers, be it surfix oil or single malts, a good plan is to obtain a bottle of argon gas - to flood the opened container in question with before closing it again, to displace all that non-inert gasses currently inside it with something that won't interact with that what is intended to be kept fresh.

Isn't that expensive. Plus the small and cheap cheap WIG inverters* these days are astoundingly good and require a bottle of argon anyway ;).

Ha, I’ve done that with whiskey. I’m not sure what causes the finish to age other than heat. If it’s oxidation, transferring to smaller containers would help.
