Surfix

Not sure if there are different incarnations of this, but the kit we have works by pressing down on it, not so much squeezing. I think its a nice little kit for small projects.

I'm with you!!! [big grin]

same system as a little shoepolish applicator.. it releases the content by pressing down on it.. not so much squeezing.. much to expensive to do that..

Festooldude, you comments make me think you have not used the surfix.

The bottle is made to release oil when pressing the sides of it, pushing down on it only squeezes the oil out of the sponge but not out of the bottle in my experience. In fact that is even how it's being demonstrated in every festool surfix video, holding it up in the air and squeezing the sides to spray oil on the surface. pressing out oil with the applicator down on the wood doesn't work as well because that way the oil never reaches the outside edge of the sponge and you can't get an even distribution.
In the videos they always work with full bottles which is easy, but once they are not so full anymore you have to squeeze harder, especially on vertical surfaces.

When pressing out oil, air bubbles come back in. And all that makes the oil go gradually bad in the bottle. It starts curing and when theres only 1/4th left you start getting all sorts of goo and crap coming out with the oil. If you wanted to reuse the bottles and not having to press them too hard in order not to damage them, you would need to keep it full at 80% minimum at all times in order to do vertical surfaces as well. I think that would rapidly leave you with a terrible mess.
Ans then why does festool only sell the bottles in packs of two if they were not seen as consumables?

The whole surfix system is IMO not fully thought through yet.

Timtool,

I do own the surfix, and yes i know that in every festool tv video they squeeze the sides and the oil squirts out.
IMHO, that is not how i work.. IMHO they use to much oil.. For me, it works by just holding the bottle and a have to say,
i hold it in a certain way, my indexfinger is hold facing inwards, and thumb and all other fingers are on the sides..
so i do put pressure on it to make the oil come out, but it doesn't squirt all over the surface.. it comes out gradually workin' the surface..

The problem that you describe about the oil being affected by oxygen, is not something i have experienced.. whenever I'm done, i refill the bottle, and put it
away in the systainer.. no problems for me..

but, IMHO, everybody works differently, and for me, the surfix system works, but only for stuff around the house.. like cutting  boards, garden furniture, tabletops, kitchen countertops etc..
no big projects..

maybe it's not completely thought through, but for me, i works just fine..

oja, Tim, mooie werkplaats, en gave werkbank.. Ziet er tof uit, en ik neem wat dat betreft graag een voorbeeld aan je..

thanks for reading,

Rick
