SYS-AZ - how far do they extend?

I’m going to build an extension to my workbench and I’m of course planning on putting systainer storage underneath it. I’m looking at the SYS-AZ drawers but I’m unable to figure out how far the drawers extend. My top will probably be overhanging the drawers by a few cm, will that interfere with the systainer lids of the topmost systainers?

I've thrown in pictures.  The back of the systainer is about 30mm from the edge of the cabinet.  That extra top lip I have is 12mm and the lid is on the verge of feeling awkward, but still self-supporting.

I would go with deeper slides instead here.

Even by 10 cm if needed and you will be sorted. Can also consider the CRG approach of deeper drawers and use the space behind for addl. accessories like he does. IMO that is an excellent use of space below a workbench and takes care of an overhand automagically.

The SYS-AZ is really great for quick&simple SYS-PORT style arrangement. Anything too different, and it becomes PITA fast.

Thanks for the replies - looks like I’m going to have to build my own drawers as I probably want about 5cm (2”) overhang. That won’t work with SYS-AZ.

I’d done mine using Fulterer FR5000 400mm length slides with over extension. More than enough to allow you to open a Systainer lid once pulled out. Much less spendy than the SYS-AZ system and the case doesn’t need to be a lot deeper than the Systainer itself.

Mine are under a countertop that is 24" deep. The units themselves are 22", which gives me space for 20" full extension drawer slides. That allows the drawer to pull out far enough to store accessories or supplies behind the Systainer. Sandpaper boxes, bags of Dominos, etc.
All you need is some kind of backing board to keep things in place.

Yeah, I have a similar setup in my homemade SYS PORT. Works fine, but I wanted to save some effort on building drawers for the new bench. But I guess there are no short cuts…

There are, but you have to deal with the consequences.  [big grin]

If you need to save space, it can be done, but you probably need to lose the overhang at least.

When I build new ones for my home shop, which is a pre-retirement project, they will be an inch narrower. Same depth, same 3/4" ply base and back, routed pockets for the feet.

CRG, the screws from the slides just go straight into the edges of the plywood “floor”? I f so what length do you use? And pilot holes?

Yes, they go straight into the edge of the ply.  They are just  6 x 3/4" and definitely pilot holes.
None of the Systainers is heavy enough to have a problem with it.

Did the same in my “sys-port”, using 19mm MDF IIRC. I did predrill tiny holes and used small wood screws. Works great and has no issues supporting a OF2200 set.

3.5x20 mm? The screws aren't of the self-cutting type?

MDF is even worse for splitting.

That’s why I pre-drilled… Even small self-cutting screws can easily split MDF but with a pre-drilled hole it usually works fine, at least in my experience.

You could also use a 500mm single extension slide and attach it from the bottom as Herr Henn demonstrates in his Chaos Wall build series.
