Seeing as its only downhill once you drink the green coolaid well I had to give it a go at a MFT cart. I have seen many version but I wanted the vacuum to be place in cart and save space. I do not have that many Systainers at this point although I have a few other tools on pre-order so Im guessing im getting ready for them.

Anyways I want to show you what I attempted and things I learned along the way the hard way.

First, I wanted the height of the cart (with MFT on top) to be same height as a free standing MFT (900mm). A bit of math, took a while as I was waiting for the casters.
900mm (total height) - 180mm (MFT folded) - 103mm (3” casters) - 36 mm (18mm top/bottom skin) = dividers height. All good an all but cut dados/rabbets and almost forgot to account for them.

Second, wanted 3 bays (2 for systainers and 1 for CT MIDI). Since I had only seen videos and pictures I didnt account for the thickness of the lid when opened and that came to bite me in the ass later on. I was originally planning on using 18mm BB all around for thr carcaus but I was trying to be as close as possible to the MFT dimensions and also to crosscut 2 panels out of a 4x8 BB sheet for the top/bottom skin, whcih width was 48.5” and once you clean the edges and square it up it was around 48”. That was the reason my top/bottom panels.

Right around the time when I installed the drawer slide and trays i came accross my drawer slides dilema (pheeeeewwww). i had to wait another week for a longer drawer slides. I had not accounted for the systainers lid depth it added once opened. Uninstall all the slides, order a longer version, wait impatiently by the window for its delivery and tackle it again. Issue was I cut matching dados on top/bottom for a middle divided thats span the length. The width of the bays was correct but not the depth of the center divider. I had sold my multitool that I never used and wished I hadn’t. Took out the domino, on widest setting with 10mm bit cut 2 groves and cut out rest with chisels.

Then some tray front covers for fun. I champfered them on their insides to make it easier to pull out (Timothy Wilmots). I could go on but here are some pics of my journey along the way.

Looks real nice! Thanks for sharing.

Glad you were able to make the drawer slides work. I came very close to having that problem, too, mine barely clear the lids. I've found having the Systainers on slides makes them so much more usable.

I like having the vac onboard, too. I just gotta figure out a longer hose and boom solution now.  [big grin]

I plan on purchasing a boom arm solution:

Buy:
  • Festool Plug-It Cord 16-Gauge x 7.5M (203926)- make sure 16 gauge to work with all power tools
  • Festool Antistatic Hose w/ Sleeve 1-7/16" x 21' (36mm x7m) (204926) - make sure 36 mm so it works with smaller dust requirement tools like Domino and Sanders, and the larger that are better with 36mm hose like Routers, tracks saws, etc.
  • Festool DC-D 36/27-AS Reducing Sleeve (768135)- an adapter with will reduce the sleeve as it says to work with smaller port power tools

EDIT: from a different post I opted out of this option as it might be bulkier than I would like for every day tasks.

Like the cart; that would definitely be the way to go if I had to move the bench around to work.

One thing about the vac I'm never clear about on cart builds: the venting on my CT-22 (yes, old...) is on the side. If it was in this cart, that exhaust venting would be constricted unless there's an opening I can't see. For reference, the venting is just above the blower port in the attached photo.

A simple cutout by the venting would be enough I'd think

Well executed.  Very nice.  I went with [member=14226]sprior[/member] 's build and currently working on it now... after around 50 Dominos and the assembly ninjitsu required to assemble it (vertical and horizontal Dominos in multiple planes), without getting glue all over everything, I realized I dont have clamps long enough so had to use screws to "clamp" it anyway so fail on the "no screws" model.  Still looks really nice and Im happy with it. I'll post when finished but it wont be "anything new" like yours.  Almost done with the carcass and wheels.  Was working on ordering the slides and caught this post.  I like your drawer setup.. looks clean.  I do like the hollow frame to save weight and plywood while still retaining strength.  Timothy Wilmotts was definitely a loss to the community but farmers gotta farm.  Anyway, Well Done!

Cheers

[member=69213]BigDan[/member] Oh hey it's nice to hear my design is being enjoyed by others.  After building my second version I've been happy with it and haven't changed anything.  BTW, wow it's been 10 years since I built that, time flies.
