Sysport Modification: Overriding the pesky green drawer release button

I grew weary of having to push the pesky, green drawer release button to open a drawer on my Sysports, particularly when reaching for the bottom drawer.

I searched for a way to override the green button function, while retaining the safety of single-drawer open at a time.  I just needed a way to hold the button in.  The green button is about 5/8" in diameter and needs to be depressed about 3/16" to release the lock.  I needed some sort of wedge or shim to slide inside the sysport, around the button, to hold it open.

While visiting my Festool dealer today, I discovered some nylon wire clamps.  The loop diameter is 1/2" and the width of the clamp is about 3/8".  Hmmmm, if I split the clamp in half with the band saw, the open loop should slip right over the pesky green button and hold it open.

Sure enough!!!  Works like a charm.  Takes mere seconds to install, or uninstall.  Now I can open the drawers, one at a time, without pressing that pesky, green button.

8 years later... is it possible to open this back up? I have some questions

Just got my sysports in and that green button is stupid. Thinking of doing what you have done with the nylon strap but wanted to ask a couple questions.

1. after all these years is it still holding up or have you found a better way?
2. how did you secure the strap to the backside of the button? since it was cut in half there is no longer a hole for a nut/bolt to secure the two ends. You siad you just slipped it on there but surly the green button has enough force to pop back out...confused?

thanks

Still working.  The nylon wire ties simply wrap themselves around the green button and the spring pressure continues to hold it in place.

It's even easier than that. Simply pull the rod out of the hole in the button, move it 1/8" to the side, and let it ride on the back side of the button. 10 seconds, no tools. I've had 8 or 10 of them for years, and they are all disabled as soon as they arrive.

About half of mine have the anti-tip disabled. That's a bit more of a pain.

About disabling the anti-tip... do you mean the drawers no longer engage the flat bar in the very back and you can open multiple drawers at once? I feel like the drawers are a little hard to open...you need to really give it a tug instead of just smoothly opening so removing that bar in the back might be nice but is it possible to remove the bar without permanent damage? would like to be able to put it all back if i changed my mind or decided to sell these in the future

No, removing the anti-tip requires a little bending of stuff here and there. However, I think I may have some of my ports where all I did was remove the spring on the anti-tip, so the drawers open easier.
