You can fit a 10' long 2x4 in the S with the hatch closed! 4x8's you are out of luck with. If you've got the full glass roof there is no provisions for a roof rack, but the earlier Tesla's have mounting holes for a roof rack, should easily be able to put a couple of sheets on that.
I've gotten alot of weird looks and comments going to pick up a couple hundred pounds of angle iron from the steel yard or a bunch of wood from the lumberyard in my S, but I've never had any issues with it. The amount of tools and other crap you can fit in it is ridiculous, particularly if you have the big frunk.
