Systainers & Dishwashers...

I've just got a brand new 12 drawer sortainer, and now I've got something to compare it with I've noticed how completely filthy my 4 drawer sortainer is, along with the roll board it sits on permanently.

I've had it probably about 4 or 5 years, and it's slowly built up a combination of plaster splashes, dust, tea & coffee spills, etc. I've just vacuumed it out (which had very little affect) and then tried to clean it in the utility sink under the tap with a scrubbing brush, scouring pad, and cloth, but there's loads of nooks & crannies that I just can't get into. Drying it is proving a problem too.

Then a thought occurred - are systainers dishwasher-safe?

They're just ABS, so I can't see any reason why they wouldn't be. The sortainer has aluminium reinforcement, and I know that that can discolour slightly in a dishwasher, but I'm not bothered about that.

It would make it a lot easier to clean - so, has anyone ever tried it???

How about a high pressure water cleaner using an industrial detergent?

(can't imagine the dishwasher doing much with plaster)

Note to self: Spray a light coat of protectant on my 20 new systainers.

What about trying steam cleaning it with one of those Karcher cleaners?

We don't have a steam cleaner, but I did think about putting it out in the yard and attacking it with the pressure washer...

If you're not worried about the aluminium, I'd do it. Put it on the top rack on the economy setting if your dishwasher has that setting. That will ensure that it won't distort the plastic.

Steaming is probably not a good idea, most plastics are formed with heat starting at the boiling point of water.  Small pieces can be formed  on your stove with a pot of boiling water.  I just made an curved enclosure for my chop saw with a standard heat gun and ABS sheet.  **I know if I had the Kapex instead of my Makita I wouldn't need one, but I need a Domino before the Kapex

I've done it. It worked well no melting plastic. I think it was a 40° wash. I'll have a look for the photos of it.

Can't find the before pictures but the 12 draw sortainer was filthy before going in the D/W and the sysradio above it was new at the time of the photo. I think it worked well and would do it again.


Obviously it was just the sortainer I put in the D/W

Thanks for the reply.  I was hoping to use the dishwasher to clean the used sortainer I got recently, so your reply is very helpful.  My old Bosch dishwasher has both a high temperature and a regular wash setting, but I imagine the "regular" is the one closest to 40 degrees C.  At least now I know it can be done.
