TalkFestool?

Jim,

talkFestool and the FOG run on two different forum platforms. I don't even know of a mechanism for importing discussions into the FOG. So, I don't think that would be a possibility. But, it's a good idea.

Yes! It should be fixed!!!!!  As Chris Fitch said, the resources that are there are invaluable.

That's easy to say when it's not your time and money keeping it afloat.

I've already offered both time and money to John, privately.

Shane, I'm wondering as an alternative to keeping TF afloat, can key topics from TF be uploaded to the FOG? They are good references and can help bolster Festool sales.

Thanks for sharing your offer re upkeep.

Something for TF to consider re content, FOGs corp advantages also have a weakness, that being shutting down discussions that delve into unauthorized uses and mods of Festool products that understandably represent liability concerns to the company. TF could be the go to for such things that a corp sponsored site can't touch.

Well, I had decided to pull the plug but just couldn't do it.

So, I spent my Saturday working on it and it's up and running. [thumbs up]

For anybody who hasn't read through Jim Kirkpatrick's Roubo build thread do it soon before we get hacked again.  [smile]

I think that thread is one of the best on talkFestool.

Thanks John!  I appreciate it as I'm sure many others do too.  My offer stands to donate both money and time if you need it.  Maybe there are others here who know  more (than me) about managing a forum site could help too?

I have tried to register over there on more than one occasion. It never lets me do so, claiming I am a spammer?

Maybe TF has been monitoring my posts on this site?

[tongue]

FWIW I have used the contact form to send an inquiry, but have never gotten a response. Perhaps that has something to do with the lack of activity over there?

When you get caught and blocked by the spam filter it simply means that your IP is listed somewhere in a spammers database. It has nothing to do with you personally.

As for not getting a response from the administrator (me) I apologize, the admin email got messed up along with everything else.

Wow, I've been reading your posts since you arrived on the FOG, and I think you're an asset to the forum. We'd be happy to have you as a member on talkFestool as well. I'll set up an account for you personally.

I appreciate the offer, Jim.

As for expertise with the forum software, I'm sure there are many here that know a lot more than I do. The 2 IT gurus who set up talkFestool  were Dan Clark and Ned Young, and they did a beautiful job. When they decided to retire from the forum in 2010, Fred  West and I were handed the keys to the control room. I knew nothing about vBulletin or server administration and Fred knew even less. We did not want tF to go away, so we've been muddling our way ever since. We lost Fred last January, so it has been all on me ever since. I am lucky to have 3 great guys who help me with watching over the spammers and other mischievous characters.

As for taking donations, we've talked about it several times, but I've been reluctant to do it because I think it will just complicate things.

Walking away from talkFestool turned out to be tougher than I thought, partly because of a promise I made to Fred. So, I guess it will be around for a while.

I have received and responded to your PM.

Thanks for your kind words! As far as me being an 'asset' - well, some would say you're at least 3/5th's correct!

[wink]

I look forward to being able to post on tF as well as lurk...

What's up with TF's security certificate? In two threads here there were links to TF and when I try to connect FireFox gives me this message:

[attachimg=1]

Since TF got hacked, is it safe again to connect to it?

As far as I know it's completely safe, Alex. The site does not require a security certificate and apparently your browser thinks it does in some places, so there may still be a glitch somewhere.

Would you PM me the links that gave you that message?

I just checked and found the following announcement from John on TalkFestool:

The Time Has Come ...

Hi Folks,

Due to very low activity on this forum, we have decided to shut it down on March 31, 2015. Anyone who wishes to download any information should do so before then.

This forum lived exactly 7 years, which is a pretty good run for a forum these days. We've had a lot of fun, and we'll all share some great memories. We want to thank all those who participated.

I was active on TalkFestool for a couple of years when it was in its heyday and found it to be a very valuable resource.  But, it is at two years since I even looked at the forum so I am part of the problem.  Sorry about that.

I would like to thank all the folks who worked so hard to found TalkFestool and to keep it going until now.

I would echo Frank's sentiments.  It's been awhile since I've been over there but when I was there I met some amazingly generous people, not the least of which was Fred.

Let me look into doing that for you.

There are years worth of good stuff there, I'd like to see as much preserved as possible.

There are many tools for that. google search.

Another option is to save the web page for offline viewing. There should be a "Save entire page" option in your browser somewhere.

I just installed Acrobat and will give it a try during tonight's bout of insomnia. You've done enough John.

Jim,
Acrobat grabs the pages nicely. Links to outside content travel well right in place. On your first few pages your photos are posted right on the page and this worked well. When you started posting photos as thumbnails it becomes problematic because the thumbnails are links to the photos. Any links to content on that site will become broken when the site goes off line. I can download and append these photos to the end of the document but it's not convenient for the reader. Would it be a difficult task to go back in and switch the photos to "in line" rather than thumbnails? If not, I can probably figure out how to re-insert them back to the location of the thumbnail.
If there are any Acrobat gurus reading this that see that I'm heading in the wrong direction, please nudge me back on course.

That thread is what started me down the long green slope and I'm very appreciative.
-Charlie

John,

I would be willing to work to set up the forum hosted on my internet hosting locked to new posts so that it could be searchable.  There is so much knowledge in so many arenas that it would be a shame to lose some of it.
