Tell me about this Domino, please

I've been eyeing a Domino for a while, but as a hobbyist just can't justify buying one new, especially as I just bought a Dowelmax.  But just the other day, someone offered to sell me a Domino "set" (his term) and a CT Mini for what I think is a reasonable price *in Canada* ($1000), if he indeed has the set.

Can anyone tell me from the picture here (http://tmark.smugmug.com/Other/tools/Festool-2/1016693567_7ryGK-L.jpg) whether it shows the Domino "set" (which I understood to include the cross and trim stops), or just the "bare" Domino ?  I looked hard and couldn't see these extra pieces, but wanted to be sure.

Also, I'm curious as to any of the eagle eyes here can identify this as a pin-style or newer Domino from this angle alone.  I've never used one so I'm not even sure which I'd prefer, but I am curious.

I know that the angle may not be the best one, and I know that I could get the definitive answer by asking the guy directly.  But I've already sent the guy several questions already and in my experience dealing on Craigslist, asking too many questions can screw up the deal.   The seller assumes you're not serious and pulling his chain, and moves on to the next guy on the list.

Thanks !

I can't see your picture, but if the domino and the ct work, I would jump on that deal!  Here's a link to a pic that shows the two models:

I can't see the photo, but if memory serves: a new Domino would run about $850 US, and a mini about $350 US.  Any accessories not found should be less than $100 to replace.

I get by with a "pin" domino machine - but could envision the advantages of the tabs.  Other folks with more experience have explained those features.  Personal preference - both are outstanding.

Hope that helps.

Brett

Honestly, if the CT and the Domino are in good condition, I would not worry about whether the extras are there or not. You can add them later. If in good condition, it's a very fair price.

I rarely use the trim stop, or the other extras, but I do recommend getting the "cutter and tenon systainer" so that you have all the cutter sizes. And the small cutter is also worth getting separately.

A new domino in Canada is over $1000, so go for it. I use mine all the time (hobbyist speaking) and never looked back after the initial big gulp.

Richard.

Doh !  [embarassed]

Here's the image I meant to attach :

Thanks guys - just trying to figure out what other expenses I need to plan for.  I don't really *need* the Mini since I already have a CT-33, but I figure I could sell it or keep it for - well I don't really know what I'd keep it for  [big grin]

Jesse,

I put up a picture, but I can't see your comparison link ?

It is not the set, just the basic domino. And it looks to be in amazing condition, apart from the crack on the left side of the systainer- who cares about that?

It has the support bracket, but not the trim stop or the cross stop.

I will reiterate that I think it is a good buy.

Thanks guys, I think I'll buy it as it sounds like a fair deal.  I forgot to mention it also comes with a 5mm and 8mm bit (these are extras, right ?) and about 500 of the 8mm x 22mm x 50mm dominos.

My only trepidation about buying the Systainer assortment, besides the fact that I already have two of the bits, is that I'd have to admit to my local dealer that I bought a Domino used and not from him ... even though he hasn't spent any time showing me the Domino, and I've bought lots of stuff from him, but in a weird way I feel like I'm cheating on him  [embarassed].

Oh and Richard, every time I see that crack I'm going to obsess over it now that you've pointed it out !

Doesn't the 4mm cutter come with the Systainer assortment already ? It seems to say so on a couple of dealers' websites.

With the new assortment, 495664, you get the 4mm cutter and tenons.

Tom

EDIT: You get ALL cutters and beech tenons.

The 5mm bit is standard.  All the other sizes are optional as are all sizes of the dominoes.

When I bought mine (pre 4mm) I purchased the 500Q set and the accessory kit (systainer with all the cutters available at that time as well as an assortment of dominoes).

It does not look like a crack to me...rather a reflection of the shiny silver spanner!  ;D Look closely the relative angles.

A bargain i'd say too!

Bingo!

Closely looking, all you have in there is the support foot.  Can't see pins or tabs.  You should get it.  The 8mm bit and 500 tenons is equitable to about $100 materials.

You need a shot of the front of it to determine whether it is a tab or pin style.

Nothing wrong with the older pin style.  I went with the tab style partly for the following reasons; spring loaded pins has been noted by some as a nuissance vs tabs that can be recessed with a quick allen key out of the way.   When I bought mine, I could have went with either, and studied the differences a lot before deciding that the newer one was for me.  You may determine differently, but I believed a lot of folks who favoured the older pin style in discussions on this board simply had gotten used to the older one, and would have just as easily chosen the newer tab style as their preffered one had they bought it first.  They are both excellent imo, but it is what you feel would be better for your own work imo.

The pin style is easily adaptible for the LR32 plate/sled should you have that equipment and or plan to use it in that fashion.  See here:

http://web.mac.com/glwork/The_Dovetail_Joint/Tutorials_files/Festool%20Domino%20machine%20mounted%20on%20the%2032mm%20shelf%20hole%20drilling%20jig.pdf

The tab style is not conducive to this modification, although many - including myself - have tinkered with it fo LR32 adaptibility, nobody I know has resolved this satisfactorily.

Just so you know, on a scale of useability/diversity, the Dowelmax is far lower than what you can do with a Domino.

I agree that the "crack" is just a refelction of the unit onto the side of the Sys carcase.

It appears to have the old style support bracket so I'm going with it's the pin style.  [unsure]  Some folks prefer the pin style because you can register in mortises (except the 4mm).  It certainly doesn't appear to have been abused.

I think you're right Ron - here's another picture the owner sent me :

.  I had read the pin vs paddle threads and while I know it will probably not make a difference to me, I was sort of getting psyched up for the "newer" style, mostly because of Rick Christopherson's advocacy of them.

My first Domino was purchased the week they became available in Los Angeles so it has the pins. Those have not caused me any problem.

Earlier this year I needed a second Domino. A friend made me an offer at a fair price on a pin-style Domino that had never been used. However, I decided to buy a new flap-style Domino from my usual Dealer, Eagle Tool of Los Angeles. It could be there are situations where the pins are not as handy as the flaps.

Normally I keep the flap Domino set up with a 4mm bit. I use the older pin Domino for everything from 5mm on up.

Thanks everyone.  I picked it up the other day and it, as well as the CT Mini, were in absolutely pristine condition.

And as I got in my car and started driving to the guy's house to pick it up, this song started playing on the radio.  Seriously.

Nice!  You are going to love the Domino.
