The BBC on Apple's Broken Promises

"When I look back, the fondest memory is not really of the Goons, it's of a girl called Julia with enormous breasts."

Lesson of the Day methinks :)

Worth AT LEAST 24 hours reflection, possibly it's own topic!

I'd be bold and say it's worthy of at least a week. The girl in question is supposedly Julia Breck. I'll be expecting a response next Saturday.

And every cost of ownership analysis I've seen shows that over the lifetime, Macs cost no more to run because of the savings in antivirus etc.

Andrew

Buying a PC and not visiting dodgy porn sites is an effective low cost of ownership strategy then. I had no idea what the real attraction behind Apple ownership was until now!

In the olden days, we used to call this kind of thing trolling.

Name some major software that isn't recompiled for the PC market?

Zork?

There's little sense in not cross compiling to PC's when they are such a huge marketplace unless it's a historically closed shop such as music (which was previously an Amiga patch)

You perhaps meant Atari ST for music. Amigas were more for games and with the larger machines, video titling and editing. But I reckon you knew that.

The Mac advantage is 1) it's what you already know 2) it's what your customer (supplier) knows 3) it fits your image or her image or both.

Notice how all three of those lend themselves to a premium price no additional engineering required!

I quite enjoy the free OS upgrade from Apple every so often, price of the OS engineering (and marketing I suppose) is built into the original hardware cost - hardware which at the time of typing this is approximately 7 years old and still going strong - Mac owners always say things like that, so I should probably not bother. So go me, I've fleeced Apple out of a few free upgrades now, ha ha!

I also like iMessage, and I especially now like how I can send and receive SMS messages on my computer, and phone calls too now. It's a nice to have. People who respond with "well, WhatsApp does free messages" don't get it, so please don't anyone use that argument.

You know how Dawkins is sometimes (wrongly) considered a fundamentalist atheist nowadays, it's a bit like people who are SO anti Apple they can't see straight any more - it's sort of "odd" to hate something with quite so much passion when it shouldn't really affect you. Ignore the problem and carry on. Like IBM did in 1933. And like Apple will do releasing that crock they call an iWatch into the wild.

With a rapier wit like that, I'm defenceless.

Are you saying that if I saw 4 guys, who are all grandparents, hanging out somewhere all wearing Festool merchandise that they may have recently been involved in a drive by shooting?  [scared]

Yes, that's totally what I meant.  [tongue]

Oh golly, is there an off topic emoticon? I can't even remember how the topic started now but it seems to be all about jumper bunnies and shooters.  [eek]

Hardly a rapier wit but I think my wit is sufficiently self-deprecating that no-one would be too offended if I handed a little bit out now and then.  [cool]

So back on topic. Could Apple do more to support their ethical/environmental ethos that they heavily promote. Are they saints, sinners or something in between the two?

Among others, there is one program that is only available on a Mac that Windows cannot get anywhere close to replicating. Sure there are programs sort of like it, but none with its comprehensive capabilities.

The program is LogTen Pro. A Professional Pilot log book that is used by tens of thousands of pilots, and is considered without peer.

And again, like LogTen, there are programs for which there ARE lesser capable programs, but none that match the design, operation, and ease of the Mac versions. Examples are BoinxTV, Screenflow, Spaces (within OSX), Mars Edit2, Alfred, Little Snitch, Parallels Desktop, Prizmo, Ulysses, and others.

99% of applications can be deleted completely from a Mac by dropping its icon in the trash. No Registries.

Yosemitie (OSX 10.10.2) is extraordinary.  Can't even imagine going back to Windows, and Linux can't match the GUI level that Apple has perfected.  IMHO.

Cheers,
Frank

If you've bought a Festool (or Apple) wearable and wear it with pride of your brand choice you might be a fanboy.

Yes for Apple - but not in the last decade.

No for Festool - but I've only been a fan/customer for a little over a year. I do have a T-shirt that I was given at a Demo, but I can't decide if I want to wear it or save it. Does that ALSO make me a fanboy?

The freebies are a bit different, depends why you wear it. If it's just a shirt to you and treat it the same as any other then no, but if it has a special spot in the drawer, wear it only on special occasions where others will notice and try not to mess it up then its sounding a lot like fanboy  [big grin]

Seriously though who gives a damn, if you like Apple, Festool or whatever, wear their shirts, caps and adorn your car with their stickers what business is it of mine or anyone else. People do this kind of stuff with all kinds of brands, tools, cars, sports, entertainment, politicians, religions, etc. So much hand wringing and bed wetting over who's the better at whatever. Like who or what you want to like and enjoy life, it's short enough as it is, so much of it wasted on trivialities. And in that spirit I'm unsubscribing this thread, I've got more important things to do.

Good luck finding a picture...

Everyone in this thread needs to get over themselves.

Crapple.

Deal with it.

I couldn't agree more and I'd put myself at the top of that list. With 2 posts to your name so far where do you feature in the pecking order?  [unsure]

Thanks, Seth, I needed a reason to paint my Wind Machine green. The Green Wind Machine.

I agree. My excuse is that I'm suffering from a severe case of cabin fever after an extended Xmas break. Rationality seems to have taken a holiday too. Anyway I can't even remember what the topic is all about now, it looks like we're on pimped out hoovers. Looks like I'm not the only one that needs to get back to work!

It is the fact that IBM and Gates made their products cheap that had the biggest contribution to shaping the information age. Yes they ripped off a lot of Apple ideas in doing it but I guess Henry Ford copied somebody but he had the vision to bring his product to a mass market and influenced far more people than Rolls Royce ever could.

Funny you mention Ford, yes he changed the world and used that success and influence for some despicable things, but that doesn't change the fact he changed the world  http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/interview/henryford-antisemitism/

I missed reading the link you posted though I was aware of his links with the Nazi Party. I didn't realise how deep rooted his feelings were and how his perceived position in society must have influenced many gullible or unsophisticated thinkers. His mass market vision stands but I have certainly seen him in a different light.

I have also as a result of this thread just purchased the Karen Blumenthal biography of Steve Jobs. It is subject matter I thought I would never read.
