The Dust Hub - How to get the most out of just one CT - Video

I have now completed the earthing of the plastic sections attached to the Dust Hub. I stripped some copper from some used house wiring and this is wrapped around the plastic sections. I have created a couple of earthing points on the Dust Hub and connected the wire there.

In another thread I was rude enough to say that I was doing the Dust Hub project and would not use any gaffer tape...well, I have used some metal tape to keep the copper in place and, by the look of it, it might just as well be considered as gaffer tape.

Hi,

This one came up on my YouTube feed and you might want to have a look:

It is a keypad that uses servos to open one gate and automatically closes all the others, but you have to assemble and program it yourself.

I will definitely setup a Dust Hub when I get setup in my shop. I'd like to keep it antistatic so I'll research this aspect, I like that the Hub is centrally controlled both for the blast gates and the power to the tools..

See reply 18 above. All you need is metal HVAC tape.

I have just had a query about the construction from Air Collector via PM and so am placing the photographs that I took during construction. I did not create any plans as it was such a simple design.

Another idea of yours I'm ripping off!!! Any chance of a few pictures of the copper earthing? I'm getting some crazy static from my nvd750.

Cheers

James

Hi James,

It is already part of my next Workshop Notes video but...

I have wrapped bare copper wire around the plastic pipes on about a 1 foot pitch (one turn for each foot of pipe) and then connected it to earth at the hub. With my old Dust Deputy I continued the copper around the DD just to be safe. With the Ultra Dust Deputy the copper earthing ends at the top of the UDD cyclone.

Peter

Ok great, thank you. In my case I'll need to earth it somewhere on the nvd750. It's a great machine, have a remote control in my pocket to switch on extraction. Have a workshop worth visiting now! So if you're ever in sunny Bristol...

Because I have put the power sockets on the Dust Hub I have been able to take an earth from the mains earth at the Dust Hub. I took that out on insulated earth wire to a terminal block screwed to the outside of the Dust Hub and connected the bare copper wire there.

I may yet wiz down the M4/M5 to Bristol.  Thanks.

Peter

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the Dust Hub video, it was the inspiration for my own system.

I don't have a Festool extractor only a Karcher wet and dry Vac but I do have a Dusty Mite.

I essentially did the same sort of thing, I fitted a number of blast gates (all labelled) and under them I installed 8 power sockets. I run all of these from a TV energy saver switch. This then has the vac attached. When the energy saver switch detects that a machine is being used it powers on the vac (just like the power take off port on the Festool extractors).

All I have to do is lift up the blast gate for the tool that I want to use.

As you can see I'm quite limited in space but the dust extraction works well and saves faffing around changing hoses and different sizes for different tools.

I've now got a long Festool hose for my Domino and TS55 and the gets plugged into a spare port. All I have to do is switch on the light that I have for the pillar drill and it starts the vac. I am probably going to add a remote control to this so I can switch the vac on and off remotely while I am using the domino or TS55.

It works really well and my dust extraction now makes the workshop a much happier place to be.

Here are a couple of photos. One before I did the labelling and another after it was all finished.

This is the power socket I use that turns on the Vac when it detects that a machine is on:

These are normally used for energy saving with TV's etc. i.e. turn off the TV and it turns off the DVD, etc. etc. I'm just using it more the other way round to turn on the Vac when it detects that the "TV" is on.

Hi Discostu

That is an amazing setup and what a clever idea of using the TV energy saver switch.

Many thanks for posting this and good luck with all of your woodwork.

Peter

Thanks Peter - very much inspired by your video.

I'm working on an MFT style worktop next and again inspired by yourself and your parf dogs - which I have to say are excellent. They are a simple thing but brilliantly useful.

Have you considered doing open days at your workshop? Maybe even get Festool invovled?

I am working on some new ideas and new uses of the Parf Dogs. There will be several new videos in 3-4 months time. Did you see the Parf Hats and the elongated ones (not given them a name) in my recent Workshop Notes video? I also covered earth protection (anti static) for the Dust Hub. Here is the link:

Nice idea about the open day but I suspect that people would be very disappointed.

Peter

Hi Peter,

Yes indeed I did see that, I even had a quick go at making some parf hats! Not with great results!! I think I need some hardwood really. The soft pine I had lying about wasn't ideal.

One to revisit I think
