The good, the bad, and the ugly

So the festools started arriving today.  (Thanks Bob!)  Today I got the mft/3 among other things.  All did not go as well as I had hoped though.

First, it looks like the angle protractor thingy rattled loose during shipping.  I have some random parts and what looks like a hole where a clamp knob goes.  The manual was no help.  It shows that a knob goes there, but I don't want to put it together wrong.  There's a sort of barrel/bushing type thing rattling around loose inside the housing.  I'm assuming the carriage bolt goes through the bushing thing.  Here's a picture of what I have.  Could you guys sort out what happened and perhaps post a picture of how it's supposed to go together?

I'm sort of not impressed with the manual.  It was mangled like that out of the box (in addition to the general thrown-togetherness)  But I guess it doesn't matter.  After experiencing the manual that came with the Leigh D4, I'll never be the same.

The other thing I'm not too impressed with is the damage to the rail.  It was wedged in there under the table fairly tight.  I'm not sure if this is what caused the damage, or if it was dropped at some point.  I think I can bend it back.  And it will be under that plastic rail guard thingy anyway.  I'm not sure it's worth contacting Bob over.  But again, I was sort of hoping that the out-of-box experience would be a little more impressive given the crazy price and reputation for quality.  Here's a pic of the dinged rail:

Blanning:

I'm just guessing but the two I set up last week both had the lock down carriage bolt, washer, and round knob nut (that hold the fence extension) loose in the package. If you look at the part that clamps the fence to the side profile's v-groove, there's a hole that is square on one side and not the other. That's where those parts go.

Is that what you found?

Brian,

Mention the rail to me? Of course you should, will get a new one out tomorrow - sorry for the inconvenience of a damaged rail. UPS can and is brutal. I had a customer send me  pictures of a damaged 75" rail that I shipped to him - double boxed. ..and there were literately footprints on the box.

Festool's stock manuals, most agree are lacking. Just wait until  customers take a gander at the manual supplied with the new RO 90 sander. ::) :-X

The good news is, there is an abundance of updated manuals, tutorials, pdf's and videos from Jerry Work, Rick Christopherson, Brice B and others right here on the FOG to compensate and more.
Again, sorry for the rail damage, but I am on it.

Sorry to hear that and surprised to see it. I was amazed the stuff I received from Bob today was probably 2/3 packing and 1/3 tools, double boxed, virtually indestructible. Never seen anything like it.

I was fortunate that when we still had a local Woodcraft store I bought my MFT/3 there as it's apparently a tough one to ship no matter what.

As you can tell, Bob will make it right so no worries.

Thanks Bob!  There's no hurry.

Since the rail box was wedged in there tight, I'm thinking maybe it landed on a side real hard.  The rail box inside was totally undamaged though, same for the table and outer boxes.  I've seen weirder things though.  Grizzly has real problems with shipping.

All is well.  The knob on the left and the nut fell off of the bracket that the track lands on.  Everything is setup and aligned.  Now all I need is a TS55.  [smile]

Brian, no doubt Bob will help make things right with the rail.

He's never let me down, ever.

As far as UPS, I hope Festool gets reimbursed from them.

Usually, their great, but once in a while.... ::)

I had a box delivered from a different vendor this past week, and it was pouring rain.

They covered the box with the plastic, on all sides but the bottom, where they put the box into a saturated snow puddle.  >:(

I was able to salvage it....but it was a dumb thing to do.
