This is a Mark Laub inspired cabinet. The top boxes are African Mahogany and are held together with hand cut dovetails. The stand is 6/4 Maple and I used a domino for the joinery on that. The boxes and bottom shelf are floating to give it that asiany look. The two small drawers have hand cut dovetails and the knobs are Horton Brass. Finished with 7 coats of Shellac.

p.s. In case anyone was wondering that wheat field made about 70 bushels an acre.

Nice design and well executed.  Thanks for sharing.

What was your procedure for applying the shellac?  Did you sand between coats and what grit?  What about the final coat? Polish, wax?

Thanks, Mike A.

Very nice...

Hope the show is a success. Sure it will be.

Nice Wheat. Is it non GMO certified organic. Kidding kinda.......

For real great work all around field and furniture both....

Really nice work.  You captured the essence of Mark's inspiration very nicely.

Welcome to FOG, BTW.  Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Nice wheat crop as well!

when applying shellac I have done the french polish deal (takes forever and wears out your hand), but most of the time I use a spray gun. I have a separate shop that used to be an auto body place so its set up pretty good for that. I usually spray two coats then buff it with 400grit sand paper. Then lightly sand between each of the other coats. I do rub on a wax afterwards. I used to use minwax paste wax but I started using this orange bees wax stuff that seems to do a better job (its more of a liquid.)

the wheat is certified but as far as that organic stuff goes its all a gimmick for people to pay more for bread and stuff. Kinda like grade A angus beef at wends (we raise a crap ton of cattle and they taste much better than that red headed lady's) Its tam 112 if you were curious.

and hunter- the cabinets and shelf are attached with screws through the bottom of the riser blocks.

Very nice! And the view is fantastic.

Do we have to guess where you are, or will you tell us?

[wink]

Excellent work and design (ie the wheat), and the furniture too!  [big grin]

Great to see something very different than Nth American post modern colonial. Well executed design interpretation. Congratulations.

[size=12pt]Note: I am not criticising Nth American post modern colonial, just saying it is great to see some diversity. LOL.  [smile]

Hey guys! As most of you could guess I'm located in western ks. yes that is one of our wheat fields from last year. kansas is actually a pretty beautiful place so i try to incorporate some of our fields and pastures and whatnot into my photo shoots. After this God awful snow melts i have a shoot planned with about 500 head of cattle.

Nice job on the cabinet! I'm not sure what you'll be using it for out in the middle of the field but hey, you can never have enough storage.

;D
