the new hand sanding blocks from festool

I have a small rectangular sanding block with dust extraction that cost about $30.  I can't remember who makes it - it looks like a cheap version of the Festool one, which it is, but I use it nearly all the time.  Yes it is sometimes a pain having the hose attached but I have a downdraft sanding table that I can never be bothered to use now I have this little block.  Takes the same paper as the RTS 400 Festool sander.  Of course, if the Festool ones had been available at the time I would have fallen for them as they have clearly got me as hooked as their Velcro sanding pads.

A question then, if I get one with a dust attactment, how do I hang myself off the boom arm?

I believe the Festool accessory is called the Gravity Fix.  Consists of 7 green bungee cords with ergonomically designed attachment devices.  Of course you add the optional Wedgie Stop which is a custom made jumpsuit in metric sizes in the official blue / black color with built in hook loops powder coated Festool green to indicate their functional designation.  Also comes with green zippers at appropriate locations.   [big grin] [big grin]

Ooops, busted and exposed.
Yeah, the hand sanding blocks are rebadged and colored versions of those. But, you do get a 'free' mini systainer.  AND, most dealers probably have a sandpaper assortment that goes with the set.

I didn't get an assortment with mine either.  I bought it through Woodcraft.com.

I think maybe it was added to the "set" later on?  Any dealers with insights on this?  It was only a few months later I saw 'em at the Woodcraft store with a 6" assortment (maybe.. hrmm.. 15 sheets?  25?).  By that time I was heavy in with an ES150 and RO150E.  Actually, my favorite of the set is the rectangular 80x133 block.. 

Although the Festool sanders are more, the free Mini Systainer with the set is nice and helps equilize the value.  They really are handy little suckers.  I think I now have 4 of the standard Sys Minis... and two of the Mini-Sys size 2 (Tanos only-- not Festool branded).  I keep all sorts of things in them, and actually only two are for woodworking purposes.  GREAT for first aid kits, car emergency kits, weapon storage, pricey layout and measuring tools, etc, etc  You can purchase latches of differnt colors (I put red latches on my first aid kit box.. along with a label).

I did not get paper with my set either.  I might be wrong, but I think that the paper attachment system might be different on the Festool models - to readily accept the Festool papers versus the normal hook and loop.

No Peter, they're the same. I have some of the yellow ones.

There is one difference though - the ones I have are all fairly soft. I think the Festool ones are available in soft and hard versions, whereas I've never seen a hard version of the yellow ones.

You are correct, Mr. Junkie. The abrasive assortment was added to sweeten the deal a while after they came out. My memory is a couple of months later.

I bought mine in the last 60days.  Did not get the green systainer, thats OK. But I also did not get a sample sandpaper pack?

Today I had to got to Eagle Tool, my Los Angeles Festool dealer for other things. Having read about the hand sanding blocks I was fascinated. It turned out I had often stood with my back to them leaning against the bench were they are displayed.

When Jessie Barragan told me the mini-Systainer was free when I bought the set of three sanding blocks, how could anyone resist? Such a deal!

My mini-Systainer is the traditional gray, with distinctive Festool Green latches. Nestled with the Systainers holding various sanders, this mini looks like it is a newborn.

BTW, already I have used the softest hand block. It is marvelous. I even tried it with some worn paper I would not have used on any sander. Because I could feel what I was doing there was no disadvantage to the worn paper. Now this is thrifty.

The first chance I get I will design a new style hand sanding block with an internal air chamber and a connector for a 27mm hose. Of course there will be suction holes for the paper. Because there would be no heat I do not think the positive pressure central hole is needed.

Call me obsessive about dust collection!

I don't know those, dust collecting hand sanders from Mirka  for 16.99 each on Amazon look pretty good.

The Mirka sanding pad with dust collection work great. I met a Mirka sales rep at one of my suppliers about 4 months ago and he gave me the small pad, hose and a roll of 320 cut to length abranet. The hose comes with a tapered adapter that fits a 2" (50mm) port. The Festool pads are on my list but a dust collecting version would be nice.

just wondering how people like these, tempted, do they work OK w/ 125 abrasives?  Turned off by the price however!
