The new Veritas spider vise appears to be quite versitile

I'm trying to figure out if this is their yearly April Fools joke or not. Looks real interesting tho

I'm betting joke. The pencil bit was the tip off....

Ironically, it's basically an advanced form of the adjustable guitar mold I built for my first guitar.... though I stopped using it because I liked the results of fixed forms better.

It is a joke but, as you say, it looks like a joke tool that might be of use in some situations (but not to sharpen a pencil).

Have you read the text?!!!

"As you add arms to your vise, its full power is unleashed. Starting with three arms, you can moonlight making drafting squares and custom billiard-ball frames. Add two more, and get into making stars, models of large military compounds, and tables for families with three children.

Increase the count to six, and the possibilities really begin to open up. Gazebos, stars of David, game boards for Chinese checkers, Settlers of Catan and Trivial Pursuit, model honeycombs, color wheels, benzene rings, basalts ... these all become possible with the Veritas Spider Vise.

For the retired woodworker who can never remember what day of the week it is, the seven-jaw Spider Vise is the solution. You can make pointers or wheels to indicate the day or build a seven-sided case to organize your daily requirement of pharmaceuticals."

I think that a larger vise of this design would be useful for holding live-edge slabs.

Make sure you click on the shopping cart button to read more about it (unless you're on a strict no-pretzel diet).

I'll save you the click:

Gotta love a company that puts this much effort into having fun. Helps to have in-house R&D I guess.

That's a lot of money to spend on an aprils fool joke. Guess their profit margins are doing fine.... ;)

This was one of their best, but who needs it when you have the MFT and lots of clamping elements?

My favorite ad picture is the guy with the WELDING goggles about to grind the workpiece clamped in the new "Spider Vise".
The Pool Cue pic is a close second though... [wink]

And the welding goggles were a clever addition.

The trick they have mastered is starting it out very plausible and then having lulled the viewer they progress into absurdity. Leaves me unsure at the end and I really hit the "add to cart" button to verify I've been had.

My favorite is the "disclaimer" at the end of the Puchless Tool Belt:

Disclaimer - Not for use in proximity to large masses of ferritic steels. Do not wear when operating power machinery, particularly (but not limited to) hand-held grinders, drills, weed-whackers, and chainsaws. Ineffective for use with bronze tools (the bronze age is over). Not for use as a human suspension device. We cannot ship by air. Use prohibited within 50m of navigational devices. Keep off migratory bird paths. Keep away from pacemakers, credit cards, active forges, and MLEV tracks. Do not enter VHS rental premises. Limit one per household - do not approach other belt users. Does not improve blood flow, automobile mileage, or the taste of food.

That was a good/funny read!  [laughing] Nice job LV, now I have to explain to my wife why I needed to buy it  [eek]

But the joke is really on us if history - and my memory - come to play.  In the past they have actually built their jokes and this appears to be the same.  Not quite portable enough for me, but a few years in the gym and I might sign up for one.

So far the story tape http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=65359&cat=1,43513,65359 is the only one they manufacture.  But all of their April fool's products are functional.
