I've been to america many times, spent some time watching different sports there too.
i just love shouting and screaming when both teams score well (not being a follower of any particular team i get to join in the revelry of both sides! often to some strange looks from other spectators.)
the one thing that always puzzled me is why the world series is called the world series when it's only american teams playing?
am i missing something here...?
i guess i could google it, and may well do, however seeing the sports section here it came to mind and i figured i'd chance a response or two.

It was originally sponsored by the New York World Newspaper...  hence the "World Series".

That's disputed. The article I linked is a pretty good resource.

There is a reference to the world series("World Champion Series") in at least one  verifiable publication in 1886, 87 and 88(Spalding Baseball Guides) and many years not as 100% verifiable before that, so going back to 1901 or saying it was from the sponsoring newspaper isn't correct and easily disputed. The only thing baseball historians agree upon is that no one agrees on who or where it first came from. I just found one mention of World Champions from 1884 with hardly extensive research. Seeing how the groups of games were called "a series" it's pretty simple to argue the term World Series was used long before it became official. "World Champion Series" is so darn close I am sure people shortened it to World Series at that time as well.

It was a marketing ploy. Somehow, Northeastern United States Series didn't have the same ring to it.

Besides, the champion of MLB is really the best team in the world even now. I would be shocked if any other team in the world could beat this year's Chicago Cubs, or last year's Royals, etc.

I always figured the name "World Series" was just the product of ethnocentrism.  Sounds way better than "Manifest Destiny Imperialist Domination Series".

I followed this series and watched Game 7, and it was no doubt the best baseball game I've ever seen, and I had no dog in the fight.  Usually, I don't get that excited about baseball games, but I'm a sucker for finals in any league, but this was a great series.

It's just a name. There's also a Miss Universe contest, but I've never seen a contestant from Mars, Melmac or Tatooine.
