Hey guys,

So with so many topics appearing today about theft, I'm curious to know what you all do to protect your tools.

We use the fleet service with our hilti gear, and was shocked when they said that the 'tracker' they use was actually just a deterrent and there was no actual tracker inside!

I've written my name in UV marker, but thats hardly gonna stop people taking them..

Looking forward to your replies!

If thieves want them they'll get them, all you can do is keep them as locked up and secure as you can, I never leave gear in vans anymore after being done twice in two years. The police are useless when it happens and the thieves have probably got buyer's for the tools before they've even got them [mad].

I take tools out the van at night. My neighbour has CCTV pointing at my driveway and I've removed my list of tools from my signature just in case.

You will never be able to control all the outside "influences".  Whether you are a hobbyist or a professional you need to do risk management assessment based on your needs.  Hobbyists need to make sure that they have coverage under their home-owners insurance policy and professionals need that they insure their tools.

To not do so is nutty to be polite.  The money aspects are cheap versus the otherwise.

For instance, my replacement cost as a contractor (costs more than homeowners insurance) means that it will cost me about 2 percent of my value per year.  I guess that in fifty years I will have doubled my cost, but I'll be dead and won't care.

Be smart guys, protect yourselves, and don't count on any add-on coverage.  To do otherwise might cost you in so many ways.

I just posted this in another spot, sorry to double, but thought it was funny for here.

My son thinks I should get that pic put in a wrap on the back door

Even if my insurance covers against thieves. I've been thinking of getting some of this tile trackers and attached (hide) in my festool tools somehow  Maybe works for somebody else.  It's a gps tracker called tile

Tile uses Bluetooth not GPS. So it only works from about 100 feet away maximum. Not a good option.

As what was said, if the crooks want to pinch Yer tools their going to. Nothing you can really do to protect them 100%.

About the most we can to is excessive due diligence. IMO is making it difficult for them to the point they'll pick another target.

In my stateside shop, I would keep everything I could in cabinets . So a crook if he got in to my shop would have to go through the cabinets to get the goodies. That would take a lot more time then walking into a shop and have everything out in the open.
Now with Festool and their systainers, I put everything back in the systainer. Because chances are a thug will enter the shop see a stack of grey boxes not knowing what's in each of them and grab some random boxes and run out.

Inthink someone here said the crooks left the systainers. That's because it takes to much time for them to go through them individually to find the good stuff.

Anyway as I said we can't stop them but we can make it difficult for them to the point they will go somewhere else that's faster and safer for them.

I agree with jobsworth. I have always had at least one dog.  If the dog barked, i never discouraged it.  n one occasion, my dog was making a big fuss in the frot yard, eventually, i went out to see what the fuss was about.  About the time i went out to check her out, she was running along the top of the high retaining wall along the road in front of my house.

The next morning, i took one of my helpers out to my truch to get the brand-new chainsaw that was on the back of the truck.  the truck was always parked at edge of clearing on other side of the road fro my yard (we live on a woodsy road and nothing but woods and swamp on far side)  as i reached into the truck bed to grab the chaisaw, I grabbed only empty air.  Oh well, had i paid more attention to my burglar alarm, i might have gotten the chance to have used that saw.

On another occasion, she was making a lot of noise towards a neighbor's house.  I knew the neighbor was away for a few days, so i walked up to where my dog was standing and making so much noise.  I heard so suspicious sounds and talking as somebody was getting into the cellar window.  i called the cops and two guys ended up spending the night in jail.  Of the breaker inners, one was the woman's estranged husband.  He was a druggie and as probably after some goodies to sell to support his habit.

My dog had a favorite spot where she wold lie and she could watch almost the entire neighborhood.  She knew everybody and knew whenever any stranger went into any of her yards of "responsibility".  Now she is gone, and nobody else in the neighborhood has a four legged burglar alarm, I don't think even the neighbors feel so safe anymore.  My dog was actually very friendly, but she had a very authoritative bark.  I think, rather than chasing any stranger away, she was actually inviting them to come visit, but no crook would have thought so much. As I said,  never discouraged her barking.  A great alarm system.

I don't have a huge number of tools. I keep them close, In my residence.. Not in the shed. Not in the truck, basement.

I think I'd build a garage if I  wanted to leave my tools in the truck. Make small so the vehicle can just fit in, then a solid door for driving in, no room to move around the vehicle..Another door to exit the vehicle, solid as hell..Alarms lights cameras.. Tools would stay put.. On holiday? Put the tools in storage..

My last van was fitted with a alarm which i had fitted. It sent me text messages if it was set off. Great for when you are in bed or a distance away from the van. It was also fitted with these http://www.van-locked.co.uk/Shop/Products/Security/ArmourShell.html
Inside the van most of the tools were in 2 large van vaults bolted to the floor. My Kapex had a chain and padlock attached to the handle of the van vault..

all my gear has my name on it. i perhaps should get one of those uv marker pens and write it on in a different place.

if im working out of the van it gets left in the van. sometimes it gets left on jobs. sometimes its in the garage.

if im working from my car its left in the car with the blind covering it. i really need to up my game i think.

ive never considered insurance. however i may look into it as ive just ordered a kapex and wouldnt like to have that stolen
