This Old House News and Mike Rowe

" Training Without the Debt" - is the heading of one of  the article paragraphs. Something that should be talked up more widely. I've come across more than one MBA degreed employee who was earning less than $ 50k/yr.

Not enough new blood is especially problematic in the yacht building world, at least here in The Netherlands. There are some youngster who want to learn the trade of a shipwright but it's far too less. I can see it happening all around me as a lot of the older guys are retiring. We're now forced to take on people who lack the creativity, affinity, insight and problem solving skills to be a true shipwright. Basically all those things you can't teach. The upside is that I'm indispensable and I don't have to take sh1t from anyone.

I think a major issue is the line of thinking of this generation (I'm 35, so kind of in between). I read posts on Contractor Talk occasionally about guys who "helped their uncle during summers" and "built a few decks" and suddenly they want to be a contractor with seven figures of gross their first year. They don't want to start off making minimum wage hanging sheet rock for a couple years, move up to PM, and then finally go out on their own after 10-15 years.
