Was looking to pick up Nova benchtop Viking but its impossible to find and its now $1100 after price hikes vs $900 when it came out.  Recently came across PBD 40 and thinking of importing it.  Its under $400 and seems to get decent reviews.  Can anyone comment on the Bosch drill press?

I never understood the wheel. Seems more difficult to operate one-handed than the traditional 3 arm design.

Needs a suicide knob. Anyone remember those?  [scared]

It does excist.

I have one, and I’m very pleased with it, especially considering the price I paid back then in Denmark (About $225). That was easily $100 less than when first launched in my country.
Nowadays it varies but at deals it’s $250. (Scheppach and Parkside has launched “competing” products) - I’d get the Bosch still, but wished they had parted with the wheel..

And that’s a whole lot of drill press for the money. With 2 gears, load compensated electronic speed control, laser, LED light and so on its great to work with.

I’ve later modded mine slightly; added a (Lee Valley) drill press table with fence, and mounted arms on the wheel - as Bob D says, I didn’t understand either, it’s not comfortable.
Now it is  [smile]

Thank you all for replies.  i did notice that its 240v only but I do have 240 available in my garage.  Overall from the research i did main complaint is the wheel and another issue is the runout on the chuck

The chuck is good, not bad at all. I’ve had no slips and it grips centred.
It’s a Röhm SUPRA-SK E. It’s metal, apart from the top ring and locking ring, which are plastic.

The motor shaft has a minute play in the top, (needle bearings) some has exchanged them. But I find that the drill bit runs true anyhow. I don’t think that that top play matters so much at all.

Green Bosch is the hobbyist/amateur line of Bosch in Europe. As a professional tool user I could never even look at it remotely. Here in Holland you can get a very nice HBM drill press for less than the green Bosch, and it will give you a lot more drill.

There must be better alternatives in the states too. You were willing to spend $900 for that other drill, there must be some good alternative there for that money, or less, before you go through the trouble of importing such a mediocre drill like the Bosch.

They don’t make ‘em in blue Alex.. “yesterday” blue and green Bosch where almost the same.
Today it’s a bit different. There are in fact pro’s that don’t even look at it remotely, they hands on use them, in their shop. Even Manor Wood who are a large scale pro woodworker had nice things to say about the PBD 40. He now has a Nova Voyager, but kept his Bosch, because why not - for most tasks it’s faster to set up than a basic drill press with belts.

That said, many are waiting for Bosch to realise that they should have made a pro version of this.
But, as good as they are in marketing they probably don’t know that, yet, or ever - someone else is going to nail this soon. Maybe they should have painted it grey..  [wink]

Believe it or not there are not many options.
There is nova Viking - which is impossible to find. There is powermatic pm2800 which is a floor standing model and only has adjustable variable speed. Nova voyager. I had voyager and made a mistake of selling it because it was taken up a lot of room in my garage. I thought I would replace it with Viking but then pandemic happened and they disappeared. Then reappeared $300 more and now gone again.
I found used wen variable speed one but it was garbage

That’s good to know. Thank you. I’ll probably order it from Germany this week
