I need an adaptor for my TID 18 that allows use of the Festool bits and drivers. I see a couple of bit holders on the Festool USA site, but it doesn't say what they actually do.

As in Centrotec?

Seth

Yes, the Centrotec bits do not work in the TID18. Normal bits do work. I have a ton of the Centrotec bits and want to use them.

Hmmm, I am trying to remember if there is a regular holder that will accept Centrotec. I don't think so . At least not with good solid engagement.

I also would be inclined to want to put less wear and tear on the Centrotec bits. No sense beating them up in an impact driver.

I am trying to sort through this topic. Unfortunately it looks like something has gone awry with a lot of the pictures.

Correct...they do not lock and my experience has been that the magnets hold the bits pretty securely. I do not usually use my impact to drill holes, though.

The Centrotec bits do not work, because the are not impact rated. It’s a feature. ;)

Please get impact rated bits and pieces to use in your TID18, for your own good and safety !

I just got back from Highland Woodworking with the Sort4 kit. It does fit the TID18 and accepts Centrotec bits. The kit includes impact bits. Thanks everyone.

Is this 204384 ?  The impact twin box with BHS50 holder?

Could you add a picture of it with a Centrotec bit and after you give it a try out post the results?  I will add it to the bit holder topic for reference. Or better yet you could post it there as well rather than me cobbling it together.

I bought the 204384 Bit Cassette BT IMP Sort4.

It does accommodate the Centrotec bits although there is a lot of slop in the fit. Rather disappointing.

I ended up ordering a set of impact bits from MSC Industrial. With these, I don’t need an adaptor.

Looks like you solved your issue but wanted to make sure you knew you could use centrotec bits in your T18 with the regular centrotec chuck and the adaptor.

Festool 496450 Keyless Chuck Centrotec Adapter

Centrotec Chuck WH-CE CENTROTEC - 492135

This combo can get ugly but at least its an option.

That won't work. He's asking about the TID 18 not the T18.

You could try the Wiha 7148C adapter. I haven't personally used this, but it's long been touted as the way to use Centrotec bits in a 1/4" impact driver. As already mentioned though, be careful when using Centrotec bits; it won't be clear whether they are impact rated. Use your common sense and appropriate settings on your impact driver.

The old TI 15 impact had a Centrotec chuck that didn't disable the impact function, and there are no warnings about using Centrotec bits with the impact function in the user manual, but it did ship with an adapter to use 1/4" bits and AFAIK only 1/4" bits were ever marked as impact rated.

Festool's impact bits are the 1/4" "standard" variety...I know it's sacrilege, but I use them with my Bauer (Harbor Freight) impact driver and they are very well made. They are a different metal formula designed for the nature of an impact tool. As has been mentioned, there will be risk using the standard Centrotec tooling with the impact tool including them shattering. Personally, I wouldn't do it with TID 18

There is an fairly short adapter called 'BA-CE' which has a hex shank (which can be gripped in Jacobs chuck), and a fitting to accept a Centrotec chuck. Not the most elegant solution for a TID, but would that help?

I have one somewhere, though I can't find it at the moment - from memory I bought it for a particular task and it worked ok - though I don't have a TID...

It's the one listed above by part number by [member=72312]Rick Herrick[/member], but the hex shaft isn't 1/4" so it won't fit into the TID 18. The Wiha 7148C is the way to go if you want to use Centrotec bits in a driver with a 1/4" hex connection like the TID 18.

Thanks for the info, but have a full set of impact bits and drivers coming today. No adaptor needed now.

Ah - thanks Garry. I had imagined that the TID had the provision to attach a Jacobs chuck for non-impact work. I'd misunderstood that - when I'd seen product shots of the TID kit with the chuck selection included, they were for kits that are bundled with another drill!

So, does the Wiha item mentioned above grip a Centrotec bit 'properly' via the Centrotec-specifc notch?
I have good experiences of other Wiha stuff.
