TID 18 or T18 (+3)?

Hello and greetings,

i am about to replace my old Makita with the T18 oder TID18.
I am not sure what the advantages of the TID are, and if it's more useable as the T18.
May use case is building fences and sheds/cabins.

Maybe you can help me to find the best product for my use case

I think the TID18 is an impact drill while the T18 is just a drill. I have the T18 and the old TI15 (impact drill). I use the TI15 rarely and only when. I need to drive in lag bolts or have to remove a “frozen” screw. For the work you describe, the T18 sounds best. The T18 is a great drill with strong power.

If I had the TID18, I might have a different opinion. I just do not have any experience with it.

You are  spot on. TID is an impact drill, and not a screwdriver at all (edit; you can use it for screws and bolts, but it cannot be used they way you use a T18). I have one and it is perfect for very large screws in wood or fasteners that need some persuasion (without putting strain on you wrists). I have used it to loosen bolts on car brakes and even a car wheel.

I also have the C18, this a T18 with a different handle, and it is a powerful screwdriver for larger fasteners. I ended up adding the lightweight and ergonomic CXS to my collection and that is the order of most used to least used: CXS > C18 > TID18. You will use the TID18 the least, but it is very powerful and a problem solver when you need one. A lot of folks will never need one, I can see that when putting up sheds and fencing it can be useful when you use 6" hex head screws for instance.

The most I used my TI15 was in building racks and outdoor benches for my club. The racks were made of pressure treated 2x6 wood and Trex deck boards. The benches were made of IPE (incredibly hard wood). I had to drive a lot of lag bolts and large screws. I didn’t have the T18 then, just a C15. The TI15 was perfect for the job. The C15 would stall even with pre drilled holes.

So, I think the T18 would be great for most of my usecases.
I will go with the set with the T18 and the PSC420 (to replace my cable Makita jigsaw).

Isn't there new version of drill, TPC and TDC? I know they haven't landed in US, but I'm waiting for them rather than buy one now.

Yes, the TDC 18/4 Quadrive is available, but it's more expensive and uses 4 gear to select speed and power (nM).
Sounds like a little bit too much for me ;-)

I think actually the TPC replaces the PDC (P for percussion) and the TDC replaces the DRC (D for… who knows. Drill, maybe?).

Festool has a simple naming convention and you  are correct T-handle percussion cordless TPC and T-handle drill cordless TDC. OF 1400 is Obefraese 1400 from German, so they are using now  English for their products.

Well, you didn't say what model Makita you're replacing. Is it the XPZ12Z, which is a regular chuck drill, or XDT14Z, which is an impact driver with a click on quick release chuck.
