Time-delayed shut-off on CT's

I have a dedicated CT for my SCMS.  It occurred to me that it would be nice if the CT stayed on 10-15 seconds after the saw shuts off.  Even better if the time-delay was adjustable in the 0-15 second range.
I was watching Scott Phillips on The American Woodshop and the vacuum he had hooked up to his Dewalt track saw had one.

The CTs do stay on, but only about 4-7 seconds.  Enough to clear the hose.

I agree an adjustable time would be awesome. .. do some quick area cleanup following cutting/sanding.

I think the 5 secs or so is too short to properly clean out the hose. I would like to see the time increased too, maybe like 10 seconds total instead of 5.

Going with the shortest possible hose would effectively increase the vacuum time for the volume of the hose after shutdown too.

Best,
Todd

Yes, that and holding the tool's trigger for an extra few seconds ...

I have a Porter Cable Vac that has the longer shut off delay. It is not adjustable.  I never timed it, but I would guess it is in the 10 to 15 second time frame.  It got annoying to me. After using it several hours a day, I got tired of hearing it run after the tool stopped.
I like the CT vacs much better because by the time the tool stops the vac has turned off. I have never noticed any difference in the amount of dust left in the hose on the Porter Cable & the CTs. I do not miss as many phone calls either because of the vac running longer.

I notice a lot of dust in the hose of the dedicated CT that is hooked up to my SCMS.  I often keep the blade running to keep the dust clear especially on deep cuts, but it's a pain.  I wish for my CT to have an adjustable time delay switch.  0-15 seconds.  Alright, I'll compromise.  0-10.

You could always add a delay on the "OFF" with an adjustable time delay relay.  They run about $35-40.  Here is the style we have used on our equipment at work National Controls

Linking to apple.com is not the best location to direct one to, since the page that address goes to cycles so you never know just what you'll get.  How about a better location?

I'm with Alex & Jim, 5 seconds is to short.  When using the Kapex, once the vac switches off if you pull the hose from the vac dust always falls out of the end of the hose.  That tells me the vac should stay on a few seconds longer.  I also have a Stayer vac that stays on about 10 secs & i have never  noticed this with the Stayer.

Woodguy.

If you want another 5 seconds, why not just blip the tool? I find 5 seconds about right, if I need any longer I just flip the vac to manual and go from there.

Yeah, I just tap the tool trigger and not even turn on the tool to get the additional 5sec, sometimes over and over.

To be sure, an adjustable time-delay device would be a marvelous feature on the CT's. Personally I would not like to try getting that past UL.

In my shop my primary Kapex is bolted in place and plugged into a dedicated 120v 20a outlet. The companion CT22 is the one that goes with me into the field. It also has a dedicated 120v 20a outlet that is switched. I have not had any problems letting the vac suck between cuts, but if there will be a wait, I turn off that switch.

Now you have gotten me thinking about using an available dust collection relay, which functions like the CT auto circuit. There is no reason why the Kapex cannot activate the DC relay. Maybe one exists with a time-delay?

When I use my other Kapex in the field with the same CT22, I hook it up with a 36mm AS hose and using the outlet on the CT22. To clear the hose I blip the Kapex trigger. I learned to do that from my Festool dealer who had just attended Kapex dealer class. As far as I can tell this does not harm the Kapex. I agree it is important that the saw blade be still before lifting it clear of the work. I often do my blipping of the triger after the blade is clear of the cut wood.

You could mount that in a SYS1 (like some of the radio hacks seen on this site), plug it into the CT outlet, and then plug your tool into that, voila!  You have 11 seconds!

If I understand correctly, the new CT26 and CT36 have a longer delay.
