SCA 8 has Airstream and the TLC 6 doesn't.

That means it has a built in fan that cools the battery, so you can charge with a higher current, making for a faster charge. The fan also makes it pretty noisy. I don't like them, but everybody has to decide for themselves what they value most.

Yeah as [member=5277]Alex[/member] says, very noisy. The fan kicks in almost immediately and doesn't stop even when it's fully charged.

They could have made that a bit smarter with a NTC or so IMO.

I really don’t think the SCA8 is too noisy. I prefer the faster charge times too. Footprint is the same too.

I have both a TLC 6 and a SCA 8 since oktober last year. (the tlc 6 came with the pdc -tid set, the sca 8 I bought seperately for the bhc basic I got at the same time). I like the SCA8 much better, the tlc 6 makes an annoying sound, like coil whine, the fan from the sca8 doesn't sound annoying, and I also like the charge-time indication.

The TLC6 beeps every ten seconds?  Are their different versions?  I have not noticed mine beeping.

For professional use, SCA 8. The noise is par for the course, but nothing too bad.

The fan is important when the battery is already "pre-heated" from use in a TSC or AGC etc. and you need it charged ASAP. If battery is too hot, the TCL chargers will refuse to charge until it cools down. That can add half hour to the charge time easily.

The time difference is not that big when the battery is exhausted but "cold" from light use.

For home/occasional use TCL 6 is better because there is usually no hurry and there is no noise either.

Ideally:
I would want to have two SCA 8 for quick charging coupled with two of TCL 6 when not in a hurry.

I have two SCA 8 and one TCL 3. I use the SCA 8 only when expect to need the battery again during a work session or when need to charge more than one battery.

Any other time I prefer the TCL 3.

I have all chargers "installed" in a charging station in the shop, so packing-unpacking is a non-issue. SCA 8 would get plus points there if I had to pack after a work session, including the charger.

I'm one of those people who can hear the TCL-6 "whine" that people talk about.  I was in my basement the other day and heard it even though it wasn't charging, so I unplugged it.  My SCA-8 hangs out in the garage next to my Makita charger; they can play "dueling fans" whenever they want, in my opinion.

There are other tones I can't hear at all, but electronics whine is still right up there for me.  It's one of the ways I discovered my UPS was dying a few months ago, too, so it occasionally comes in handy.

I am in that camp as well.  The fan on the SCA seems kind of normal but that whining on the TCL drives me up a tree, even though its not really that loud.

mine does.  im from the uk, so that might have something to do with it, but yes, it drives me up the wall.  mine's bust atm, so waiting on a spare part.

My TLC beeps and whines so bad I try to be in a different room when it is on. I've finally cracked and ordered an SCA 8.

I don't mind the fan noise because at least the fan is doing something useful but I have a TCL6 and that makes a bloody irritating beeping noise every few seconds.
They didn't need to have that noise and some wiseguy on here suggested I take it to bits and cut the buzzer wire.

I honestly have no idea what they were thinking when they made that charger cos other than the beeping its fairly good.

For those who maybe live in a market where the TCL doesn't have a beeper? Ill describe what mine does.
When I first start charging it has a pretty quiet constant whine for maybe a minute or so,then during the main charging phase its quiet with a little 'Bip' every few seconds.
When the battery is fulky charged theres a constant whine again.

All of those noises are indicating things that can be shown with a LED.

I'm not so fussed about it making a noise when the battery is fully charged, that fulfills a function and tells me it can be removed and or disconnected.

Its the "Bip" every few seconds thats damn irritating.

I work in building sites and often the only place to charge batteries while I'm at work is in either the site office or the canteen.
A charger that makes a stupid unnecessary noise is likely to be switched off by anyone in that room which should otherwise be fairly quiet.

So, they made a quiet fast charger  [smile]

I don't have the TCL6 or SCA8, just the charger for the CXS drill that doesn't make any noises as far as I have noticed.
I was considering getting the T18 that use these chargers.  Hence my interest in this topic.

Do all of the TLC6 and SCA8 chargers make noises worldwide, or is it somehow only the UK version?    Do the USA versions make noise?

There are a lot of choices these days in cordless drills.    As much as I would like getting another Centrotec drill to leverage my investment in Centrotec bits/adapters, a noisy charger might make me reconsider this.

I would be not too concerned about the noise. Yes its loud (SCA 8)/ hearable. But only when the battery is being charged. And is charges pretty fast (most < 45 mins). IMHO not worth looking for other battery platforms.

You can always make a soundproof (or limiting) cabinet  [tongue]

Funnily, I had never noticed the bleeping on the tlc 6 charger, today I used both chargers at the jobsite and found out mine bleeps too. On site I didn't notice the coil whine sound that much, previously I mostly charged the batteries at home. (I got a bunch of batteries with the new tools I got, because of the "get a free 5.2Ah bluetooth battery with every tool" deal.) I don't find the fan of the sca 8 noisy at all, the first generation of the makita li-ion chargers had fans of which the bearings made a lot of noise after a while, now those were noisy. (I mentioned it to a makita rep I met at a store, and he got me free replacement chargers.
