To drywall with 4500 RPM or not to drywall with 4500 RPM ?

As refered to above, speeds have to do with the material being drilled.  I do commercial/industrial work, most drywallers use the 4500 speed drills.  The guys screwing sheeting and roofing to 16 ga+ structural steel and the guys installing truck beds in trailers use the slower and higher torque screw guns.  I just gave my PC adjustable torque screw gun to the guys that put on my standing seam roof.
That gun could spin your wrist like a pretzel if caution was not used.

As you know I decided on the 4500 yesterday night. Overall I think it makes the most sense for me as I have basically everything else already available in my toolbox - so going with a true specialist tool can't be wrong. I'm super happy, finally a magazine fed driver  [big grin] [big grin]

But, I also do agree that it is interesting that two machines were designed and built instead of one which can switch gears. Is there a reason behind this that can be shared? [member=57769]TylerC[/member] [member=101]Festool USA[/member]  (I feel super stupid that this never really occurred to me when I was at the roadshow...)

Kind regards,
Oliver

First off, the 4500 is the right call for you. Since you're primarily using it for drywall -- as opposed to something like decking -- the 4500 will give you an appropriate amount of torque.

As to why we don't have an all-in-one DWC with variable gears, I don't have an easy answer. Considering that no one in the market has one, I'd assume that it's simply not feasible to built (at least not at a reasonable price point.)

I got notified my DWC 18-4500 shipped today, since I paid for the Express option, I hope to have it in my hands tomorrow morning. But tracking doesn't work yet  [scared] [scared] [scared] [scared] [scared] [scared] [scared] [scared]

Is any one elese as jumpy as me when a new tool is supposed to arrive?  [drooling] [drooling] [drooling] [drooling] [drooling] [drooling] [drooling]

[member=61712]six-point socket II[/member] absolutely.

I'm waiting on 4 different deliveries right now. One just notified me (USPS) that I wasn't home yesterday. That was news to me [eek] [mad]

[member=13058]Kev[/member]

Hate it when that happens, and luckily it only happens very rarely nowadays - mostly when it's not one of my usual drivers...

Seems I will have to claim my money back for the express shipping, dealer obviously printed the label but did not ship/hand over the package to the courier... So no DWC for me, today...

It's a pitty. Buying something like the DWC 18 off the shelf is out of question around here, so you order online from a basically reputable source, pay extra, and it still doesn't work out.

My new, personal high- or better "low"-light was last Thursday - went to a new to me local Festool dealer only to learn that he doesn't want to sell Festool anymore - robbed 20 minutes of my life explaining how poorly Festool treated him when he started out, but would "order" anything I want from another dealer... (Funny thing, he is still listed on the Festool website as dealer. Had a totally dusted RTS on the shelf and some boxes of sanding paper, boxes of dust bags and a couple of accessories.

I have this special kind of luck with local dealers...

Next time I go back to the dealer in the next town, he's better stocked but definitely has no DWC - otherwise I would have bought it there.

Kind regards,
Oliver

I don't own an autofeed, cordless nor a festool for doing Sheetrock. I bought a corded Hilti screw gun. It seems to do the trick and I believe I paid $140 usd with their fabulous warranty of zero days.  You buy it, you break it, you fix it. I think you would be safe with the lower torque setting/higher rpm for hanging Sheetrock into wood stud and metal track. I'm assuming your at a 21-26ga thickness for the metal studs and at a low KSI rating as well. As another poster mentioned it just comes down to the fastener for the metal studs if you want to mix the material.

Depending on which one you are going to use more, you can always spring for a 2500 rpm or 4500 rpm tool in a corded variant if you feel the need for a second tool. I know the autofeed, battery operated guns are not cheap - especially x2 tools.

I've seen some manufacturers make extensions for driving in deck boards or screwing Sheetrock into the ceiling so you don't need to bend over or climb a ladder or work on scaffold.

Hi!

You're correct, the stand profile for example will be approximate 22ga.

Once the DWC arrives, which now should finally happen tomorrow, I'll be getting some Material to try. I already ordered two boxes of screws from Festool one fine one coarse threaded... So I can test drive the whole setup before the actual project starts. :)

Thanks for you input [member=60789]mkasdin[/member] !!

It's a great gun [member=61712]six-point socket II[/member] . Had mine DWC4500 about 18 months and a couple of things I've discovered in use.
Good
It's very reliable. Most reliable gun I've owned
It will drive all collated screws from budget to Festool. I use mid range local supplied.
A battery will drive thousands of screws
The drive bits last 10,000 screws plus
Not so good
Not brilliant in corners with the large contact foot
Occasionally knock it in to neutral with thumb when gripping it

It's worth taking the nose apart ( no tools required) and cleaning and lubricating mechanism after a few thousand screws to help reliability and I always blow the dust etc out of it before storing. It is the dirtiest Festool drill I own, I hate drywall dust, gets in everything [big grin]

You have no idea how much, Mark...  [big grin] [big grin] [big grin] - But I can assure you it's more about the surrounding circumstances than the actual drywalling  [big grin] [big grin] [big grin]

Thank you very much!

Well, it happened, magically... My finger clicked, I got an E-Mail, and I guess by Tuesday the DWC 18-4500 in the mail  [scared] [eek] [scared] [eek] [scared] [eek] [big grin] [big grin]

Kind regards,

. Really Oliver... Your finger magically ordered the tool....You've spent way too much time around [member=10147]jobsworth[/member] on this forum and his quick excuses on how ANOTHER Festool got mysteriously bought.... [poke] [poke] [poke] [jawdrop]

Just kidding of course. I don't have a need for a dedicated Drywall gun like that, but it sure looks nice.... [eek]

Your Honor, I plead not guilty... My lawyer will explain shortly why I can't be held accountable for buying the DWC...  [big grin] [big grin] [big grin]

lol.

It's something about the green I guess...

On a more serious note, I did some more testing today - I just love it, letting it cycle the screws is so much fun... But it definitely needs a couple of screws to find the right depth setting, pressure and pace - then it's like popping a row of balloons with a hot needle...

Kind regards,
Oliver
