Is there any reason you guys just don't build a plywood box and screw the cyclone to it?  Similar to the UDD?

I am using bags in mine. Just lift the lid and replace the bag.

The problem I have is the 'plate' at the top of the cyclone itself- not what the cyclone is attached to. Also on site and in the vehicle weight is an issue for me... Plastic bucket vs wooden box... I can and often do (every job) suck water...

I am a builder and specialise in bathroom reno's... I use the vac to suck out the subfloor wastes- ain't pretty but the bucket quickly washes clean.... Next....

A cyclone (DD) has changed the way I work. I use the vac. so much more now....
Because I don't have to change bags, etc...  The suction of the vac is maintained at a high level, etc for so much longer. I am a 'Work Clean' type of guy- that's how I work- clean constantly as you go...
I love the concept of a cyclone and vac- I would never go back to a straight Vac.

But the DD has, for me, been and remains a shit design- There has to be a better way... This static issue is an outrage! It shouldn't be there... We shouldn't have to run copper- the 'RIght' material for the collector should have been developed- from the start!

There's a "cyclone looking" Protool unit that I've seen on the floor at Northern Abrasives. If I can find a picture of it I'll stick it up here. It's obviously a pre-collector for the DC's but I haven't looked inside. T work with no moving parts it would need to be cyclone like!

To look at it's a big mobile bucket like unit with in and out hoses on top - yeh, I need a picture ...

FWIHS it's physically pretty big- like 1200mm (4ft) tall. I've seen guys using them for concrete grinding on site. They're pretty good- but more of a 'big-brother' type setup.

'Compact' is not a word I would use to describe it...

Perhaps around a 20ltr (5gallon) size would be the ducks-nuts?

A few of our customers have reported static problems while using the Dust Deputy.  Oneida is offering an upgraded grounding kit which includes a
more-conductive hose and supplemental grounding components free of charge for those customers.  This should eliminate any static problems on vacuums with static conductive inlets which are properly connected to a functional house ground.

Couple notes:
Not all vacuums have a static-conductive inlet.  Please ensure that your vacuum has an anti-static inlet and if it does not you must provide an alternate direct earth ground path from your hose and connections. 

Some people have reported that their static problems were caused by an improperly connected house ground.  Please ensure you are properly connected to a house ground per your vacuum’s instructions.

Currently all Oneida Ultimate Dust Deputies from the factory have static dissipative components and these supplemental grounding measures to ensure a completely grounded system.

Hi, I bought the Dust Deputy from your local distributor in Australia: Carba-tec
Your basic model with hoses and buckets sells for $195.00 here.

Anyway, my question relates to the friction-fit of the top plate (where the vac- hose plugs in) where it is a 'press fit' into the top assembly of the cyclone....

Virtually from day 1 this plate has been popping out of the top of the cyclone. It drives me absolutely insane because the slightest bump on the vac hose and it pops out...
Up to 30-40 times a day I am having to plug this plate back in again...
It really is a very poor design. However, I persevere because when the cyclone is working; the cyclone makes a huge positive difference to my work-flow.

My question is whether you have any remedy to this fault, or a workaround/suggested repair that I can use or try?

I was thinking of epoxy glueing the top plate on but I wasn't sure if epoxy will adhere successfully- and I'd appreciate your feedback on this.

The cyclone has been improved with a better joint at the top to prevent the parts from separating.  They are "virtually" indestructible now and have been for some time. 

If you are going to try to glue it you want a special glue for polypropylene.  I think there is some called "plastifuse". 

If you'd like a new cyclone I'll replace yours if you just cover the postage to ship it to you.  (just call our office and tell them I offered a replacement). 
You could also go back to Carba-Tec and see if they can warranty it for you that way.

Since I started this thread I thought I better add that Oneida (Jeff) has been in contact several times with me to show concern and let me know about the permanent fix.

I feel pretty confident that they will have this under control and it will be a desirable product again.

I really do like having the UDD.  I have emptied the box about 3 times in the short time that I have had it and the Festool bag is still empty !

LOL, actually they were kind enough to reimburse me for the module I just replaced because of the issue.  I am quite happy about that and impressed with their follow through.

Also happy I am not filling my bags up because the Dust Deputy does work !

I just wanted to add that in addition to the UDD,  Oneida sells a fantastic full shop system.  Last December 2012 I purchased the 3 HP V-System and have it hooked up to my Cabinet Table Saw, My long bed Jointer and my 12" Powermatic planer and with the addition of my Festool products, my shop is dust free for the first time in 35 years!

Thanks, Ron.  But, I really don't mind taking a little ribbing from time to time.  As they say, "turn about is fair play," and we all know how much I like poking fun at myself and Brice others at their expense.  [tongue]

And just for the record, my cyclone is an original ClearVue rather than one of the Oneida products.  The copper tape I've applied not only connects the inlet and outlet inside and out, but also extends to the cone area (again, both inside and out) along with the underside of the lid to the bucket that the cyclone is mounted.  This eliminates the possibility of any excess static build-up anywhere within my cyclone.  Also, I wrapped copper tape to the inside circumference of the antistatic hose connectors that I fixed to the the intake and exhaust ports so that the copper tape applied to the cyclone is connected to that, and thus assures a good connection.
