Today is my birthday.

I have experienced two major birthday events in my life:  The 2001 terror attacks in NY, Washington and PA; and today with Irma.

My birthday wish is that all affected by 9/11 can continue to heal and all affected by Irma can start to heal.

When I turned 50 a couple of years ago, my Mom knew I was upset and tried to comfort me (or so I thought).

"Son, it's only a number.  You still have a lot of great years in front of you.  You're only as old as you feel.  50 is the new 40.  You're still young at heart.  The only difference is........

you'll be getting your AARP card!"

It came in the mail two weeks later.

Thank you all for the kind words. I was given an interesting challenge a while ago that gave me pause to think about life.

What is the best course of action:
Seeing in order that I may believe or believing in order that I may see?

Happy birthday to you youngster and you are obviously a good person with your birthday wishes. I would have probably thought mainly about new tools for myself :-)

I have a close relative who was in the WTC for 9/11 (not to mention the earlier bombing attack in the 90s). He barely got out in time, saw endless gruesome sights, and personally knew nearly 100 people who died that day. Impossible to imagine. He is still dealing with this and his employer and others didn't really do much to help. I am no expert, but PTSD is something that applies to 9/11 victims too. One issue you never hear about is how people like him were asked to go back to work in the new building and how hard that was. He and others were basically told that if they can't deal with it, quit or retire.

altho I never suffered from PTSD, I have known friends who had the problem.  With help from family and friends, They were able to weather the storms.

I did have a funny situation shortly after I returned home from my little visit to the orient. There was a small private airport about five miles from my home.  The airport also had a pilot school and it was not uncommon to hear small piper cubs practicing power dives, stalls and whatever other manuvers that pilots might practice.  I had only been home for a couple of days and walking across my front lawn to my car when I heard, for the first time, a plane going into a power dive. As soon as I heard it, my reaction was automatic. I covered the last 20 feet to my car thru the air and the first I realized what I was doing, I was looking out from under my car. I was looking around to be sure nobody had seen what I had done.
