To set the record straight, Taiwan (former Formosa) and its surrounding islands form the Republic of China. They claim that the mainland China is a part of the Republic of China. It is oriented toward Western society.
Mainland China, aka Peoples Republic of China, on the other hand claims that Taiwan is a province of mainland China. Now and then rattling of sabres is heard from their armed forces.

### Dan, you beat me by a few seconds.

And lets not get into what the Formosans think about their home being overrun by Chinese refugees.

My Apologies re the Taiwan - China thing I do not want to offend anyone. Although I still disagree about the quality. I guess it is just my opinion that I have not had good luck with Screw Products screws. But again I use the smaller screws (as a cabinet maker) I do not do heavy construction.

Fastenal also sell Spax, but they are the most expensive place to purchase them. There used to be a place near Paine Field that sold them at a good price, but I am not sure if they still do.

Paul,

I'm not suggesting that Screw Products screws are better than Spax.  I just haven't used any Spax screws.

Lately, most of the Screw Products screws that I've been using are #8 to #10 wood screws and cabinet screws.  I've been quite happy with them.  But that's just me.  I'm sorry that they've not worked for you.

In any case, I'm going to check out Spax.

FYI, here's the GRK website:http://www.grkfasteners.com/.

Thanks,

Dan

Spax screws are not cheap ( especially here in rip-off UK) but I consider them to be the Festools of the fastening world. Uncompromising quality, costlier than the opposition, clever engineering and they do exactly as it says on the tin.

I used the TStar washer-head screws on some outside framework and garage doors and they are a superb modern equivalent of the coachbolt. They do not require a pilot hole and go in oak beautifully using a Makita impact drill. I wish Festool had an impact driver as the CDD and the C struggle with the 180mm screws.

I have just installed three large windows into my front porch using Spax frame anchor screws. No plugs required, just a slightly smaller diameter hole drilled into stone/concrete and the screw cuts its own thread. Not one broken and no slip with the Torx head. Fabulous products and worth every penny.

The local Menard's (very similar to HD and Lowe's) sells the SPAX screws.  In fact, they're what's holding up my Triton woodracks right now.  They seem to be doing an excellent job.  The were indeed self-drilling, fit through the #14 holes in the metal rack, and have an oversize head which prevented them from crushing the hollow tubing it's made from.  I also used the green pressure-treated wood versions to secure the landscape timbers in my wife's garden.  The ones I used (can't remember the size) were around 3/16 shaft diameter and 5" long.  As I recall they were around $0.70 USD/ea.  So, you wouldn't want to buy a box of 500 "just to have" like I do with my Kreg and other "general-purpose" screws.
