Track saw front dust gathering?

I'm always looking to expand my list of available 3d printed products and I'm prototyping a front track dust attachment that will also act as a track saw holder when lifting the track. I'm doing some kind of market research here to know if the dust that escapes from the front of the track saw is considered a problem for you.
 
No, I just place a small block of wood in front of the end of the cut. It stops the dust there and I vacuum it up.

FWIW, Dave Stanton has something like this on his stanton bench, though I'm not sure if it's 3d printed; I noticed it watching some of his other vids and haven't really looked into it much.
 
Meanwhile, I finished my first version of my Track saw front dust shroud. I still need to design a Y adapter for my ct22 to be able to test. Stay tuned.

You don't really explain the use of this, other than "front dust shroud" in a thread where someone mentioned putting a block of wood at the end of the track, to stop the dust.

As I see this unit, it would be really cool if it was a bit more focused on the blade area of the saw and the saw itself actually pushed the whole bracket along the rail with the cut.
If that is the intent, I missed it. If it is not the designed intent....maybe it should be?

If cutting on a table like an MFT, during the cut, 99% of the dust goes to the track saw's dust port. However, at the end of the cut there are some dust escaping at the front of the saw. The dust shroud is to get that escaping dust. It also serves at a stop so when the track is mounted to a rail mount like on the MFT, you can leave the track saw on the rail and just lift to change the piece.

Like I said, it's maybe a bad idea that doesn't worth pursuing but it's not expensive to make prototypes. I would be curious to know if you think that's a problem worth solving.
 
What I am saying is that it may be able to solve two problems with a simple attachment.
Not all track saw cuts are on an MFT. I use mine for cutting straight cuts at or near the edge, sometimes also cutting slight tapers, where part of the cut leaves the blade exposed (or nearly so)
In a case like this, the dust extraction is not so great. A simple piece that could be inserted into the opening of your device, reaching closer to the point where the blade exits the wood, might help with this? Then the whole thing would be pushed by the saw. It wouldn't be cumbersome to the saw, because it's not attached to it. Being held to the track by the upward facing groove would keep it from falling off of the track as it moves, since the hose would apply some drag against it, trying to pull it off.

I admit that I didn't think about this use case. If the left screw is not tightened in the t-track, the whole thing can move freely and can be pushed by the saw. It wont fall off the rail since the profile of the plate is already holded by the center groove. I don't know if it would help for those kind of cut but it's doable. That would be something to test.

This is a cool idea!

    I am late to the party but here are my thoughts on the (granted) untested prototype.

I am guessing that you will find that a 'Y' splitter on the vac will reduce the suction going to both ports enough that the overall dust collection will be worse. To me this will be a two vac set up for best results.

I am also guessing that the inside of the rail port will need tapered sides to direct dust to the port. Aaand, I bet 1" taller and 1" wider will make a difference too.

I know he was looking for a dust shroud, but he was basically looking for projects for his 3D printer.  I was responding to the underlying quest to make his 3D printer busier.  I see now it would appear to be off topic.

  Yes, and your response was fine.

      But it didn't make sense to have two completely different development topics intermingled once they both got going. As opposed to a topic that was actually filled with a whole bunch of general 3D print ideas.  The split should be good for both topics. It wasn't intended as a slap on the wrist.

Thanks for the feedback. I figured that the dust collection will be equivalent with the CMS router table where the dust collection is also splitted in half but I won't be able to tell before I test it (printing the splitter now). As for the taper, yes it's tapered inside to prevent dust from gathering and help airflow.
 
The splitter is done and it works quite well. I tested it and the airflow is ordinary if I use 2 X 27mm hose ends but with a 27mm and a 36mm, the airflow of the 36mm is quite high. I did not test 2X36mm since I don't have 2 but I'm pretty sure that the 27mm connected on the track saw and the 36mm connected to the front dust shroud should work as expected. I also printed a cap so it can be used with a single hose.

I did my first cut test and the right part is too thin. It deformed by the weight of the hose. It's not a big deal as I beefed it up and I made it a single part. I'll do some other tests after I'll print the modified part.
 
Well talk about reviving an old thread LOL. After some iterations, I finally launched the product. Thank you for all your feedbacks. It helped a lot. I finally went with a 2 part dust shroud that are magnetically attached with a "mouth" that goes closer to the blade for better dust gathering. There are 3 interchangeable mouths for different thickness (1/2, 5/8 and 3/4). The rail attachment is really beffier compared to the first version and if mounted to an MFT table, it serves as a stop so you can leave the track saw on the track and raise it to move or replace your part to cut. A 36mm hose must be used to attach to the shroud.https://creationsjbb.etsy.com/listing/1620036534

Does this require a second hose or will a ‘Y’ fitting connect the dust port built into the saw and your added piece?
