Troubleshooting new pressure pot set up

A few weeks ago I bought the Bandit pot and a new gun to replace my old pp set up.  I should've known, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."  My old set up was working ok but my pot was rusted out on the inside and I couldn't get anymore replacement tips for the gun.  With that said, I tried setting up the new gun and pot today and ended up wasting a few frustrated hours.  The first thing I struggled with was adjusting the air at the gun.  I eventually realized that the regulator was bad so I replaced it with the one from my old gun.  After that I couldn't get a consistent pressure at the tank.  I would set it at 5psi but it wouldn't stay there long.  With my old set up I would hook the air hose up to the pot, adjust the pressure there and leave it.  I couldn't do that this afternoon with the new one.  It would creep above or below that 5psi but never stay there.  Additionally, the new setup seems to be using twice as much air as my old set up.  I know that sounds crazy but I could spray pretty long runs with my old set up without losing much pressure.  In just testing with water this afternoon the pressure at the gun dropped pretty quickly.  I know my compressor could be the culprit but it would seem like a fantastic coincidence for something to go wrong with it the first time I try to use my new gun and pp.

Russell the guys at CAT are great, give them a call and they will help you out. Like Tom said it sounds like the regulator, at the 5 to 15 PSI that you typically run a pot, you shouldn't need that much extra air. I ran a similar setup with Devilbiss stuff on an 8cfm @40 psi, 25 gal compressor for years. Just not great when spraying large surface areas. What gun did you get?

Interesting, curious to hear from the OP as to what is/was the problem.

I had an air leak on a Fuji 2 quart PP which looks exactly like the CAT version coming from the cap gasket area.  It took only a few minutes to lose 10psi.  Worked on the container's lip and cap mating surface.  Can't hear the leak like before but it still leaks but much slower.  Just using air, starting a RolAir JC-10 from a full tank, it cycled at 10 minutes but didn't wait for a second cycle which should be longer.  Just using water after enough time where pressure should be lost, water didn't drain back to the container so anything heavier shouldn't either, I'm not going to worry about it.

You could have a gasket leak causing high air usage as I had.

Hello Bill if you look at the bottom of the 3m cup there is a small orfice/relief valve installed. Check for leakage there but really if the cup liner stay's compressed your good to go.
You are worrying too much about this. [smile]
Fill up the liner with your product and start spraying

OT!  Well the mini-PPS with one liner leaks so bad that it won't even collapse the liner and/or bring water to the spray tip!  Used it today with two liners and some thick latex and it worked fine.  You guys must have all the good components and I got the rejects.  [scared]
