TS 55 -- puff of smoke -- no longer works

My 20 month old saw no longer works.  Was fine but all of sudden wasn't cutting well - thought blade was dull.  Next cut big puff of smoke and then it died. Tried to call customer service but they are closed. So I sent an email, waiting to hear back.

Anyone else experience this?

I looked for a reset button - did not see one.

This saw has been used but not abused. I've come to really rely on it and the mft.  I was planning on more Festools in my future -- but this is disappointing. It will be harder to convince the wife of the quality -- she knows that I have Porter Cable and Makita saws that are 10+ years old that I abuse but still work fine.

Thanks for letting me vent.

They'll take care of you, Mike... tomorrow. Your dealer should be able to loan you their demo' saw until you get it back.

Tom

Mike,

Yeah.... That sounds stuffed !!!

Alas, it does happen sometimes with tools - even the green stuff...

My Kapex had a slight issue. Called up their tech support. They picked it up, took it away, fixed it, brought it back.... No charge. No question.

I think your just unlucky with the TS55. I've had mine 4 years and she's still going strong :-)

Mike, as far as I know there is no reset button for the old puff of smoke, the good news is a 20 month old saw is still under warranty. As Tom posted already, Festool will take care of you.

Nothing more dissapointing then seeing a good tool die.  When I worked in Hi-Fi I use to tell people that everything breaks and its how the company responds and handles the problem.

I would have though a high-end tool like a TS55 wouldn't run on smoke like every other tool out there...onece you let that darn smoke out it just stops working [sad]

I might be wrong or maybe looking for an answer but, are there brushes in the TS-55.  If so, it could be the built in safe guard they have.

Otherwise Festool will fix it up good as new.  As mentioned earlier, a good dealer should let you use their demo saw, untill yours returns from being repaired.

I am really surprised that Festool does not include in the safety section of the manual a reference to how important it is to NOT LET THE SMOKE OUT!!!  [eek] I give this training to all my electricians  [big grin] . For some reason, nothing electrical will work without the stored smoke. I think a special odorant is added as well to give the user a quick sense of impending doom. Had a variable speed drive just this week let it all out. I blame the plant operator. Amazing how much crap is stored inside all those capacitors - can really see it when they explode!!

hi mike, i am sorry to hear about your saw.
it really is difficult to get the smoke back in once it escapes!
but as was stated already. you are in very good hands. call your dealer tomorrow and all will be will again in festo world.

regards, justin.

Your smoker will undoubtedly get addressed today, or when you contact Festool.

Though, it's still crappy to be without the saw for a little while. [attachimg=#]

Some of the dealers will give you a loaner...and some of the bigger chain stores won't.

Well I'm still waiting to hear from festool -- emailed thursday night. I am at work from 8-5 so have not had time to call.  I will try to find time on Monday.

I was just contacted. First e-mail did not get through.  [unsure]  Should talk to someone on Monday....

I am betting someone here (Shane) will be getting in touch with you shortly.
normally things get resolved through a phone call or email but if they don't this forum acts like a almost direct link.

Nothing better than good service from real people and not from a faceless company.
That makes my decision  right and safe.
Thank you Shane.

Mike, My first 55 had some oil dripping from the case, not a lot just a drop. I wiped it off the next day another drop. I called Festool and can't remember who I spoke too but told him what was happening. Two days later brand new 55 showed up at my shop. I did not ask for a new saw, but great. After two weeks I called back to have the old one picked up.

I had a problem with my domino, same guys took care of me right away. Very easy customer service to deal with...

Just got it back  [big grin]

Work performed included: brushes, armature and housing. (covered under warranty)

It was a quick turnaround once I got in contact with Festool

[thumbs up]

Thank (insert chosen deity here) for that! I read your original post the day I purchased my TS55, been sweating with worry ever since, now I can find something else to worry over.  [big grin]
Glad it got sorted.

Just remember to not let the smoke out of yours.  It's almost impossible to get back in!  [tongue]

I had not realized how much this saw had changed the way I work. -- No having to bring a table saw, "just in case" -- cutting tapers, angles, sheet goods etc.

I'm glad to have it back. Hopefully they put in extra smoke so this doesn't happen again  [wink]
