TS55 Teardown on YouTube

So my point is...30,000 hits later let's just say that 1% of the hits sent in a buck because he is begging for dollars, that'd be $300, so if he offered this saw as a modified Festool item with no warranty and stated that he'd butched it and he offered it without warranty for $300 off of retail, then I'm ok with that, But the reality is that he will find a person to purchase this bastardized product at close to full retail. Some people have no shame...

I've enjoyed his videos over the years but he lost me immediately with his endless bitching about the Plug-It cord.  He doesn't know scheiß from Shinola.  I still use the same Plug-It cord that came with my TS55 purchased in 2011 for ALL of my tools as it strapped to a 27mm suction hose.  I can't even begin to imagine how many times I've swapped tools out on that same cord without it ever letting me down.  And should it ever do so, I have several others that came with other tools that I've never even used.  It's really amazing how one of the best assets of the Festool system is seen as some kind of detriment.

If you wish to avoid irritation don't read the comments.  One clown said that "you never find Festool in any professional shops."  That might come as a big surprise to those of us here and probably an even bigger surprise to the European tradesmen.

A tear down will always point out singular "weak" items...

He didn't point out any "weak" items. He's an idiot that doesn't have the first clue about engineering, and tossed in a few fancy words in an attempt to "Baffle with Bullhockey".

For example, if he had the slightest clue about ANY variable speed motors, he wouldn't have even hesitated upon noticing the magnetic pickup on the shaft for a Hall Effect sensor. It's standard on every variable speed motor for the past several decades!!! It's not new. It's not even a question. Yet he sat there and pondered it as though it may have been present to pick up stray metallic debris (like the magnetic drain plug on a car engine). Idiot!

Then he goes off on the thermal melting point of the plastic housing. Huh? If your motor, any motor, hits 360 degrees, it's already GONE!. But this brainiac didn't even notice the 2 little red wires leading to the embedded thermistor in the motor housing....let alone what a thermistor actually is. The motor controller will shut down the motor long before it ever reaches 360 degrees, because the insulation on the windings can't withstand that high of a temperature.

[attachimg=1]

He was in awe about seeing balancing grinds on both ends of the rotor? Geez, where did he get his experience, watching someone balance wheels at the local gas station? Even a teenager at the gas station knows you balance both side of a wheel.

What bloody idiot is going to try to remove a rotor without pulling the brushes? I was dumbfounded watching him yank on the motor housing with a screw driver. It wasn't until a minute later that he admitted to not pulling the brushes. Dust boot not withstanding, did he not suspect the brushes would also have to slip past the shaft bearing?

Of course he was surprised to see spiral pinion gears...because he's an idiot. Does he not realize that is a major upgrade from a straight pinion gear? Those aren't cheap to broach! But they mesh a heck of a lot better and are a heck of a lot quieter, and there's a darned good reason why spiral pinon gears have been standard in automotive differentials for the past century.

Think I've been hard on him? Not even close. I'd have that boy in tears if I had the chance to say what I think to him personally. He's that much of an idiot.
Well said Rick ,exactly what I thought when I found this video yesterday.

I did think about posting a link on the fog but didn't want to give this idiot any more publicity.

Even with a glass of JD on a lazy Sunday afternoon .. I found this idiot too much to take.

He starts his crap with am extremely derogatory stab at woodworkers, then barrels down hill. Who knows if it goes anywhere intelligent after ten minutes - that's all I could take.

Sadly youtube has become a revenue stream for morons like this and we've just feathered his nest. [embarassed]

I think it's an interesting video.

The guy is a little misinformed about a few things, like the usefulness of the plugit cord. But nonetheless it was interesting to see inside the saw.

For me what was most interesting was that despite the price-tag of the saw and the fanfare around Festool in general, there's really nothing special or expensive inside it, that makes it any better than the offerings from Dewalt, Bosch, Makita, etc.

I made the decision that I only only justify the price of a Festool if it offers something no other manufacturer can provide, for example my Domino XL 700.  So for me, to see that a Festool product is just the same inside as any other comparable product from one of the big names (Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee, etc) is actually quite comforting.

The thing you're not taking into account is design and accuracy. It would be foolish to think you're going to find Leprechauns or something amazing inside the saw!!

The other thing you get from Festool is Festool - the support and warranty, confidence, etc. If you don't value it, that's cool.

I would say the design and accuracy of my Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee, etc tools is equally as good as Festool. In fact I think the Mafell designed Bosch tracksaw is superior to the Festool offering.

The customer service I've received from Bosch, Makita and Hitachi has been superb also.

The no questions asked return policy from Festool within 15/30 days is unique, but for me I tend not to actually buy a tool until I'm sure I want/need it, so this aspect is a bit moot.

So, it's not that I don't value it, I do value it, it's just I can also get it elsewhere.

I purchased my t55 about  10 years ago. Makita, bosch, milwaukee  etc were  still  flogging  basic saws  back then so maybe they have caught up now.

Me too, he needs to be starved of the oxygen of publicity ... or just skip the publicity!

Like some others here I too have watched some of this guy's videos over the last couple of years.  I'm glad someone out is taking apart tools so we can see what's on the inside.  The guy's style is somewhat brash, that's what most people seem to like about him.  He's not a tool designer, nor does he claim to be.  I do think one should, in theory at least, be more knowledgeable than he is when doing these tear down videos to avoid spreading misinformation.  However, from what I've seen he is far more humble and willing to admit to his mistakes (and learn from them) than what you might get from watching this one video.  He will read the comments and likely talk about some of the things he misassessed in the next part of the tear down.  I do like that about the guy.

I think you guys are being a little harsh with some of the comments.  It's perfectly fine to disagree with his assessments, opinions and his style.  Still, some of you guys are going too far with the name calling.  Frankly it doesn't reflect well on the FOG and I might add it's against the rules here.  Remember this place is supposed to be a friendly place to discuss tools, not belittle others, even if they are misinformed.  I think we are more than capable of helping get the correct information out there in a more civil than what has been shown thus far.

I strongly disagree Brice, if you look at what he is doing it is spreading misinformation and inaccuracy. Worse than that much of what he does has the potential to be downright dangerous. As others have asked what happens when he assembles this, given he hates woodwork (mind boggles) he's clearly going to be selling this to some poor sap.

I actually think a festool lawyer should send him a greeting card.

I also see zero merit in his video simply borne out by his comments about the systainer, it's cheap ABS one second but pretty neat another, meaningless and adds nothing. Frankly I gained 400% more from reading Rick's slapdown of the video than I did from the video.

And that's the important point: knowledge transfered by someone who truly knows and understands something is totally different from drivel pouring forth from a clueless clot!!!

There's lots of great people on here with all sorts of experience and knowledge and skills, most say daft stuff at some point or have a sense of humour or a pet foible, but he is none of those things, just a muppet with a soldering iron and a hammer!

I'm not defending his misinformation.  What I don't like about the internet is that it seems to be standard practice to criticize and belittle every mistake or difference in opinion.  Correcting bad info and constructive criticism are good as long as it is done in civil manner.  We haven't seem much in the way of being civil here.

Also, it would be jumping to conclusions to assume he is going to sell this saw to some unsuspecting person.  We don't know what he is going to do with this saw.

I think you might be confusing oranges and apples here, I've never yet seen a video on here I wasn't impressed by, the effort that went into it, the attention to detail, the preparation: yours, 1/2"shy, Tim Wilmots, FastEasySmartTool and of course Peter and many many more! All have their own areas of focus, personality etc etc this guy is nothing like any of those. He's easily two orders of magnitude less informed, less humble, less civil himself. No positives or merit at all next to that list.

Even his comments about screwdrivers are laughable, he clearly treats all tools as cheap disposible junk so perhaps he should stick to the junk yard!

No we don't, but he said himself he hates woodwork, and repeatedly ridicules the (exaggerated) cost so I can't see him thinking of it as a lifelong investment! So not a giant leap for mankind.

You guys make me laugh. He's a machinist, not a woodworker.

I for one appreciate him taking the time to take apart the machine and post it on youtube. If you don't know how to decipher your own thoughts about the information he provides and use that information with the knowledge you have of Festool, woodworking, and the saw itself, you're losing out on a learning experience.

If you so desire to rid the internet of his "misinformation", call him out on it. He seems to respond to challenges...

This guy could  probably teach me a lot. But I wouldn't want to learn from him.
Knowing which way  the axial thrust  is directed  is basic stuff.  And for a so  called  "machinist"  to get it wrong is very surprising.

I think this is a very reasonable response to this video and I for the most part agree with your thoughts here.

I don't like to read all this name calling either. Some people here react way too strongly about what's just an entertainment video. Get your priorities straight.

Some of his videos were posted here before. Nobody seemed to care when he took on DeWalt or Makita.
