TS75 with different tracks

Hi,
I just purchased a TS75 with the 1400 and 1900 rails. If I set the guide rail cams for the 1900 track then the saw is loose in the 1400 track. Is this normal that the rails are different? Should I get the rail replaced?

Thanks

[member=71222]davegr[/member] - I would expect the guide  rails to be close enough in width of critical features that I can connect two rails end-to-end  and run my cam adjusted track saw across both of them. If purchased locally, I would take both rails to the store and check several of the rails before leaving with a set that meets your reasonable expectation.

If you did not purchase locally, then I would put a digital caliper on the rail's saw guidance feature and compare the measurements in at least three places along each rail and contact FESTOOL Support with your findings. - You may want to ask them as the first step anyway.

I have a great deal of of rail an d have found it to be consistent. can you measure the difference, as mentioned in at least 3 locations? You may have to return the rail. Though the question is, which one is out of spec? Do you have access to other rail?

Thanks for your replies. I did talk to support and they said that some difference is normal - different production lines may not match exactly. If you use the tracks without connecting them then adjust cams to fit each track. If connecting them then put the tight one first. I recall reading somewhere that s slight side to side movement of the saw on the track is okay and won't affect the cut.

I did measure the tracks in a few spots and the largest variation is around .015". While large enough that you can feel the difference between the 2 tracks when setting the cams I don't think one or two hundredths of an inch will affect anything. I did some cutting and the cut edges look fine.

the proof is in the pudding. I can see variations in the lines and the state of the dies. They are in the end extrusions. I think now I am going to measure my rails..... Just curious. I am glad that your cuts are working out.

I have two 1080, a 1400, 1900, 2700 and 3000. All the rails have basically the same size guide -- except for the 1900 that came with the ts75, which is noticeably bigger than the others! I actually can't join rails with it , as I find there's too much slop on the other rail after adjusting for the greater width of the 1900, not to mention the bump that happens when I cross from one rail to another.

I believe the nominal width of the spine is 10mm but the actual width does vary a little. Measure yours with a metric caliper. Reject any rail more than 10mm and any less than 9.9mm.

When joining rails put the wider rail first and set the guide jibs to the wider rail. When tightening the connectors make sure the sides of the spines towards the splinter guard are flush. Butt a straight edge against that side as you tighten or buy the TSO connectors or Betterly jig.

As you guide the saw down the track maintain a little sideways pressure (away from the splinter guard). That way when the saw moves onto the narrower spine the blade will still follow the same path as it did on the first rail, even though the jibs are looser.
