Matthew,
I was thinking that it would be a good idea to create a board just for tutorials. The TS55/MFT perspective of Rey Johnson, many other great tutorials and member generated material that are great references for members but tend to get lost in various sections on the site. The How to board is a good place for these but get mixed in with the many how to questions.

Everyone reading this please reply with agree or disagree comments.

If at all possible, the tutorials could be stickied with all of the random commentary weeded out, and the original thread copied below?  I know that's a lot of work, but it would be an awesome source of information in one place.

Eiji,
I'm open to this.  Could you tell me more about how you'd like to see this play out?  Are there particular threads in the "How To" board that you think might be good in a Tutorials area?

It's possible to do this.  But that would mean I would have to copy the first post (the actual tutorial) into a new post and lock it so no one responds.  The problem is, the original poster would also be unable to edit the material.

Let's keep discussing this and develop the concept a little more.  In the meantime, I'll look into options for making this work.

Thanks,
Matthew

Could also use a wiki to hold the tutorials. There must be a wiki out there that uses the same markup as the forum does.

This idea sounds great!. I am new to the site and sometimes have a hard time finding info on how to items, like the one from Per on dimensioning rough stock with the TS and the planer. Invaluable info. As far as the responses, I would let them be. The important info will be at the beginning of the thread anyway and it will allow anyone to critique and suggest even better info,

Good Morning,
OK, I just created a "Tutorials" board.  I'm a little unclear how we'll differentiate this from the "How To" area, but you show me!

Lead the way.

Also, please indicate any posts that you think should be moved into the "Tutorials" area.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Matthew

This is so cool.

My list

Rey Johnson's TS55/MFT
Qwas' MFT enhancements
Mirko's LR32 sys secrets
Overtime's Euro Cabinets 101 (I'm still waiting for the 102)
Brice's LR32
Links to Jerry Work's tutorials
My Entry Door thread was a tutorial

That's a good start. I know I am missing a bunch. No offense if I didnt list any other good ones.

I think that the "How to" can now be just questions on how to do something and the "Tutorials" area can be the place members show us how to do something cool with their festools.

Eiji,
OK, thanks.  I just reviewed the list you made, and I see what you mean.  If there are no objections from the owners of those posts, I'll put them in the "Tutorials" board.

Is the Tutorials Board up yet?  I'm having a hard time finding it.  Thanks.

I'm still looking over all the posts to see which ones would do well as tutorials.  To be honest, I'm not 100% sure how we would differentiate a "tutorial" from a "How To."

A tutorial is a how to, isn't that the definition?

I think the guys may want to separate a tutorial area for the use of the operation of a tool.

Where a How to would be say, how to make a mortise, as opposed to how do I work the height adjustment the tool.

So in short how to actually use the tool is a tutorial and how to make an actual cut(nothing to do with the tool, but how to set up for the cut say a mortise)  is a how to.

Make sense?

Plus I think many see a more formal writing style as a tutorial verse a guy using regular post to explain  something. Like john's stuff is formalized. Though some of Johns stuff is on how the tool operate and some is on how to actually make things.

That's the only way I can see a difference between the two.

Brice's Kapex manual may be a tutorial on how the tool operates. Johns article on how to make a jointing operation with the TS 75 is a " how to".

But technically a "how to" is " tutorial"/

Many also see ready made pdf's more as a tutorial also, again as opposed to having to search through threads to find an explanation.

So maybe a "tutorial" should be a pre made formal document showing how a tool operates and a "how to" is a posting answering someone or giving an explanation in posts of how to make or set up for a certain operation, ie cut.

Or

Possibly the tutorial can be defined as  "formalized documents prepared in advance that has nothing directly to do with a post or thread and allows a  quick finding of pre packaged info not having to  use the search function to look through specific posts or threads".  As you can see this definition "can include more than the tools and cover mortises etc, but everything must be a report type format that is downloadable in one file".

Simpler: I guess a tutorial can be a report that  can stand on it's own without a thread for it to make sense?

I guess you as the administrator will have to define what each a "tutorial" and "how to"  is and if you feel they warrant a differentiation.

Just some points to try to narrow down a difference between the too, what do you think?
