Two New Centrotec Curiosities... ???

I purchased the NAINA 2015 Centrotec Installers Kit, which was delivered to me while I spent a week in Scotland last month.

There are two things in this kit that I find to be somewhat unique, and curiosities. I'm hoping someone on FOG can expound upon their purpose and change.

1. The Centrotec hand driver has a new connection that is not removable, but is made for Centrotec connections. I've never seen this before, and the other ones I have use the standard removable Centrotec chuck.  What's up with this?

2. What would be the purpose of the pointy ended attachment pictured. The only thing I can think of is for marking a point for drilling or screwing, but it seems like some serious overkill to use a Centrotec attachment for that purpose.  Am I missing something here? Does it have some OTHER nefarious purpose, other than potentially being used as an ice pick or murder device? [eek]

Your thoughts on these are appreciated. [smile]

Frank

Hello Frank

I'm taking the pointy thing to be a bradawl:

https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=bradawl

An old fashioned tool used to poke a little hole into wood prior to drilling to stop the drill bit slipping around or prior to inserting a screw into wood.

May be Festool decided there was no point in continuing with the removable Centrotec chuck and have launched this fixed version??

A bradawl has a flat tip. You twist it to make the hole. These were used with hand driven screws to start them.

I think that this is the modern version, it is just for poking a starter/position hole for a power driven screw.

You are not alone there,

I too have taken delivery of the same kit and was a bit confused with the new Centrotec hand driver.
Oh well I thought, I have an old one kicking about and thought I could just add that to the kit, but of course there is no where for this old one to go, as its too large for the bottom tray where there are plenty of empty spaces, so it's either the new one or the old one.
I will have to see which one is more useful.
As for the pointy tool, well that's the most expensive bradawl I've ever bought, but this will come in handy when installing small hinges Or chasing up late payers I guess.

Apart from that the kit has been very usefull

A high end murder device without play in it is always usefull I pressume  [big grin]
I think it is for starter holes for hand driven screws.
You could use it to scratch mark somethin to..

The crazy thing is that the kit also included a regular Centrotec chuck...but nowhere to use it in the kit! [huh]  Oh well...one more extra one for my other tools. Just surprised by the new unremovable one, and the inclusion of an old one that has no male to fit it on in the set.

Cheers,

Frank

I believe that set also includes the Keyless chuck centrotec adapter which is where you would use the regular centrotec chuck.

AHA!!!!  You are absolutely CORRECT!  Missed it because it had come loose from the sys insert and was in the side crack!

You win a prize!  Your choice of either a nail or a screw. Shipped priority mail! [big grin]

Thanks,

Frank

P.S. What's your current Sys count?

Take a closer look Frank, and I think you might find, that what came loose in your kit is not the same thing as the Centrotec adapter that brings all drills to the party. If your kit is the same as mine on closer inspection you might find that is a socket adaptor.

Hmmm..... You're right! Dang!

[member=20971]elfick[/member]  Prize offer withdrawn! [big grin]

Oh well....never too many Centrotec Chucks, right? [huh]

Cheers,

Frank

My guess is that the non-removable chuck on the hand driver is just to make it a little less clunky. The inclusion of the awl helps bring the hand driver one step closer to being an all in one tool. Does that awl have an item number on it?

Seth

Frank, Current sys count according to my son last week, is nearly 50.
Not in the same league as you I'm afraid. I'm just hanging off your shirt tails.

No item number that I can see. Just "Festool" stamped into the base.

I won't say how many, but with all honesty, I was literally SHOCKED by the count while setting up for the picture I took for the other thread!  I really didn't have a clue!

I need to spread them out somehow, because if my wife sees those stacks... well, there IS a Divorce Attorney living in the community here! [eek]
