If you were going to make your own tenons for your Domino, what type of hardwood would you use?  I'm thinking of making some tenons for the 10mm size Domino at the widest width for when I want to use it in some thicker and larger applications.  What hardwood would you guys use taking into consideration price, stability, availability, ease of use, etc.?

Thanks,
Rob

I've got to say this question surprises me. I haven't done the math on it, so forgive me, but can it really be worthwhile making your own Dominoes ... adding personal time into the equation ... ?

Kev,

He is looking to make domino sizes (bigger) that aren't available from Festool.

I would say beech is as good as any.

This might open a debate on the need for Sipo tenons at their extra cost, when a beech hardwood tenon with the joint well coated in Cascamite or epoxy resin glue is going to be pretty bomb proof. IMHO.

i make my own and i generally i think it best to make them out of the hardest toughest wood you have, to make up for the usually smaller size compared to real tenons.
I work allot with beech so i use that, but now i have allot of oak scraps so my next batch will also contain that. I would avoid softer woods when you have hardwood scraps at hand. I hate seeing precious wood going in the firewood bin, now they go in the domino stock bin.
For my domino XL i made an assortment of 14mm stock using 15mm afrormosion scrap planks, known as african teak it doesn't rot outside and is extremely hard. Used it already on some outdoor garden gates.
