UK - Curious new Tanos item

Looks like a low-energy bluetooth enabled 'beacon' that allows you to track your Systainers.
I would guess each has a unique 'serial number' so you can take inventory and perhaps be alerted to items that are no longer within 'range' perhaps for theft prevention.
Smartphone app probably allows you to assign the beacon serial number to your tool for asset management.
With the 'locking pin' feature it might enable the catch to be 'locked' preventing access to the Systainer unless you have hammer, screwdriver, pliers, etc. Not totally clear from the simple description on their website.
I think Bosch and others are exploring this for job site tool management.

NFC isn't connected to Bluetooth, and by definition (Near Field) doesn't have an "out of range" type capability.
NFC is the sort of technology you use for cashless payments using your phone. The device to be scanned has a small antenna and memory space that can read (and sometimes written to) by the device. It may have a serial number that can be used as a unique index to information you hold on your phone, or as mentioned, could link to a website address or similar.
I'm not entirely sure what the killer function would be for this if I'm honest. You could achieve much of the same through a simple sticker. I have a number of NFC "dots" that I could attach to Systainers should I want to use that sort of functionality.

In this instance, its primary use would be advertising, the label would contain a description of the contents and a link to your website.

Can also be used for stock control / security etc etc
Just like a 3D barcode, but able to be edited / rewritten

This is what the newish 5amp dewalt battery's have, I was told that once registered you are able to deactivate the battery, not sure if it's true though.bobfog said:
It would defiantly be a good idea as I think it would pritty much stop battery's being stolen if the scum knew that they would be deactivated as soon as they went missing.

can direct you to a website.
give your systainer a digital identifier/label.
not sure it's all that useful for the woodworking industry, but remember that Tanos is first and foremost a storage case manufacturer and the boxes are used in other fields, where this functionality might be more useful.

I'd assumed it was something for their medical market, so that they could do inventory control and only allow certain users to have access to whatever was inside. Curious to know how the "locking pin" facility would work, especially for such a low price.
