Union Jack End Grain Cutting Board

I finished this little project last night just in time to give to my British born wife for Xmas. It was a lot of fun building but took a lot more work than I anticipated. It's glued up using 90 degree clamping and no jigs. Used quite a few Festool products during the assembly and finishing. 

As to be expected on any "first ever" project, there's a few unexpected 'features' but she liked it well enough that she decided she's going to display it instead of using it. I guess that means I'll need to make another for her to use.

For those that are interested, it's made up of purpleheart, hard maple, padauk and wenge.  It was my first project working with this much end grain and it was a challenge.

With the end grain I am sure it was a bit of work, but it is pretty stunning.
I can see why she wants to present it.

Finished the whole piece with a food safe mineral oil and then finished the top with a mix of 75% food safe mineral oil and 25% natural bees wax. Then buffed the surface to a nice sheen. Will periodically refinish with the mix of oil/bees wax.

Btw, a heart felt thank you goes out to Rick Christopherson for his assistance when a piece of wood managed to find itself between the blade and the guard in my kapex and wreaked a little havoc at a very inopportune time. Had I not had Rick as a resource it would have caused a delay that would have caused me to miss my Xmas deadline on this project.

Don't worry, over 95% of UK citizens wouldn't have a clue about that either. Those boards are exceptionally well made though.

How many hours in total for the build including planning and finishing?

One day I may be talented enough to make one!

It can be referred to he Union Jack and it is the Union Jack that I shall take with me to the grave!

I just saw this response and realized I hadn't replied.  I had about 10 hours researching and studying what I wanted to do and how to do it.  Then, after getting the necessary wood, it took about 10 hours of effort across 7 days to make.  That included a last minute final application of a mineral oil/beeswax on the top on Christmas morning.  I presented it to the wife that afternoon. 

When I make the next ones, I'll likely make a batch and to make an additional 10 might take another 10 hours, but then I can sell them and put the earnings towards my next green toy.
