Used Metric for the first time on project

I propose to universally adopt the erg for energy, the atto-parsec for distance and the RFLY ( Rhineland feet per leap year ) for speed.... That should end all discussion ! [wink]
Divide as you like....
As for the "product" : in the very distant past I've been known to fool around with a couple of carats myself.... Mind you, that was in the days I was WAY short of 1/10th of a long ton.... [embarassed]

Regards,

Job

I like grams and kilo's.

A product of the `80's maybe?

This thread has gone off course, let's reel in in before someone gets offended.

Who are you?!?!  A moderator?! Jumping from topic to topic making sure people stay on topic?

 Mmmmm ok then what about 112 pounds to a hundredweight?Or 14 pounds to stone?Or 16 ounces to pound?Or 8 pints to a gallon?And what's an American gallon?????? ;)

Or how about this....

I once had a horse that was "16.5 hands" - a hand is measured as 4 inches - (52 inches) tall ....

.....and Noah's Ark was "300 Cubits" - length from the tip of the middle finger to the elbow ~ 17 to 22 inches ~ or (approx. 450 feet long).....

......could Noah have been the first person to unknowingly give people the middle finger?   [eek]

Jim

Nice one Jim, I thought about hands for horses. Then Fathoms, then leagues then knots. Also bushels, roods and others but thought It might stretch the thread a bit
[blink].By the way although I'm a firm metric convert for some reason I stil like to think in mpg [huh]

With respect, I think many people who have been members here for a while do see Brice as a kind of honorary moderator, and listen to his suggestions accordingly.

Cheers,
Rick

I don't think anyone has to take my advice. As Rick said it was a suggestion on my part. However, I don't think it should be too much to ask that members exercise some tact while posting. Would any of you argue with that?

I took it as a joke. No joke is ever tasteful to everyone.

Really, I was introduced to Metric in the real world in the late 70's myself.   :)

My first real world use for metric is on topic even if some find it rude. Possibly if the government gets it together it will not be taboo to talk about, I mean I see jokes about drinking here all the time.

Greg

Nice one on completing your project totally in metric.  Its all i have ever known & i don't think i could do a project in imperial.  Do we get to see pics ?

As they say, No pic & it never happened  [big grin]

So you made instruments? What kind? What did you make? sounds interesting.

Like I said, I started education in instrument making, but it was not fitting to my temperament, I had not enough patience to stick to it. The next step was education in aeroplane engineering. More glamorous but too restricted to me so I went to a technical university for mechanical engineering. From there I worked most of the time for shipbuilding related companies.

I hope they don't start a shoot-out over this cultural controversy. By the way, I'm glad we got rid of Roman numerals on digital watches.  ;D

roman numerals on watches....yea that was tough....thank got for progress.

on another topic why not decimal metric time? instead of our outmoded hour based time. [big grin] [big grin] [big grin] [big grin]

In the period of Napoleon (the real cause of this slightly agitated exchange of opinions) they started a study to make time decimal. I believe they proposed a day of 10 hours, a hour of 100 minutes and a minute of 100 seconds. Then there would be 100000 seconds in a day in stead of 86400.
Anyway, in one of the scientific fields a circle of 400? is in use, called a gon.

As for the geometry issue. the best example is break an object into three equal pieces. this is something you can do using calipers ect. you can then express the pieces in terms of a ratio or fraction in what ever units you want. If you have  ten foot pole you can not cut it into 3 equal pieces. So if you take 3 pieces exactly 3,1/3 so that they add up to 10 feet. you could not create  those pieces in the metric system. Just on example

Silly.  [big grin].

Just wanted to call attention to the fact that expressing body parts measurements in inches is far manlier than doing so in millimeters.

;D

I will post some photos of the DYI Sysports when I build number 2 & 3. The first one was a learning experience. I wanted to use the Domino to get some experience with it.  So in a few weekends I will post some photos.
