Using IKEA cabinets with rails to make Systainer 3 storage?

So I recently bought a stack of Festool/Systainer boxes, to try helping organise things in my apartment. I'm not a carpenter or tradesman, and this is just to organise things at home, so the boxes won't be going anywhere. They're really nicely made boxes, and they go well on the Festool dolly. Also, the WAF isn't too bad, compared to say, garage metal sliding drawers etc.

However, the issue I'm hitting is that I need to unstack each box to get to things:

I found there is one Festool unit with three sliding drawers, but the drawers are quite shallow for what I need to store, and it's the only drawer unit I can get here in Australia

I saw there's some Festool Sysport option, but they are *pricey*, and probably a bit overbuilt for what I need.

I read elsewhere here that some person in the US is using IKEA Sektion cabinets to store his Festool Systainer boxes:
https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/...ainers/sometimes-you-only-have-time-for-ikea/

You can't get Sektion here in Australia, but there's METOD - which seems somewhat similar.

The Systainer 3 large boxes are 50cm wide and 30 cm deep - so the METOD that is 60cm wide and 37cm deep seems like it could work.

Could I pair something like that with the new Systainer 3 rails, to store the Systainer boxes, and let me slide them in/out easily?

Note that I am not a carpenter nor do I know anything about working with wood, hence why using a pre-built IKEA option would definitely be easier for me. I suppose I'd need to attach some padding to the inside, to get the rails to the right width (40cm), right?

Any issues with this plan above? Or any other suggestions?

Well, can you get the rails overthere? Do you only have Sys3 or also Classic and T-Loc systainers?

For the rails you need that specific width.

Note that with the rails you still need to completely remove a Systainer from the cabinet to access it's contents.

You want want to look into drawers as well, either the Festool SYS-AZ drawer or self-build drawers. Both Festool drawers and rails waste 80mm of depth; the Systainers are only 300, but both require 380 deep cabinet. With DIY build you could use 100%+ extendable drawer. I know Hettich and Blumm have those. They extend 100% + 38mm, allowing you to open a Systainer that's on the drawer.

I would like to order IKEA Sektion cabinets for another purpose, but they are not in stock at our local IKEA, and online they warn not to start a project until you're sure you have every needed component.

That sounds very, VERY, interesting. Can you share a name/link/reference to some of these?

I have never seen/noticed these when browsing the (huge) Blum catalog and cannot find even now, being aware they do exist.

These would be very useful for the partially-hidden kitchen design I have in the making, not to mention the Systainer use case noted here.

Although there is mention of the TU and UF codes for over extension (overtravel?) drawer slides in the Blum catalogue (the one I have in front of me is identified as "Catalogue 2020/2021 • KA-140"), I haven't found any actual slides in the catalogue that did have overtravel. I might have overlooked something, but a case sensitive search for these codes did not come up with any either.

See Hettich KA 4932. For the 300mm version; EAN 4023149413575

The 38mm overextension will allow a Systainer T-Loc lid to be opened. Note that the the slides themself are 12.7mm wide and 50mm high, so you have to have some height separation or additional width.

I thought I had seen them from Blumm too, but can't find them either now. I know the Hettich was cheaper by a lot anyway.

Thanks. These look great!

For Systainers I expect to use Aluminum L profiles as "sides" of the drawer to save on width, so height will actually help with stability.

EDIT:
30€ per set, ehm, will have to re-think that for the systainers usage (normal full-extension rails are about $8 over here)

Should look harder. You can find them for

Well, for single-sided they are the best at saving space. There is no way I want to loose 80mm behind my Systainer storage.

Took a look; Can't order them for store pick up OR delivery by me, haha.

What part? The Ikea stuff or the slides I linked? Or??

The Ikea cabs themselves.

Got me thinking though, might just go buy a few sheets of Melamine; more work than this, but cheap

Look at a series called “Trofast”
The systainers fits perfectly inside, both in depth and width.
For shelving and slides it’s possibly best to utilise slim drawer pullouts that fit in the grooves/dados.

Tell me more! What drawers?

I only see the grooves in the 'natural' versions. The white ones have some plastic / metal "groove" attached onto the sides? The natural ones are also 2cm smaller and 3cm lower.

You said you use the systainers to store things, not tools as you aren't a woodworker. How many systainers do you have?

I use a three-drawer filing cabinet to keep my Festool systainers under lock & key. One cabinet can easily store 6 - 8 systainers or even more (not including the cabinet's top which can hold 3 more systainers), depending on the cabinet type and systainer size. The  sliding drawers allow me to get to the content without removing the systainer from the drawers. However, I usually do so, for example, bringing the domino joiner right to the bench for use.

Second-hand cabinets are very affordable, including some that sell like scrap metal at garage sales with asking prices between $10 - $30 mostly, and most sellers take your counteroffers! Sometimes, free cabinets can be had from Kijiji. (Replacement keys are available based on the lock ID#.)

If you have any kind of empty shelving, all you need is a piece of plywood and some drawer slides.

3d printed feet entirely optional, but fun.
