Using z-clip for table top install

I have done a couple of these but always used the figure 8 connectors.  Want to try the z-clips for this dresser build.  I watched a couple of videos and most folks have a groove pretty much the length of the apron.  Do I really need that long of a groove?  I am thinking just use the 4 or 5mm cutter on my domino to cut a few slots (every 10-12" or so ?) to fit the z-clip into.  Also asking about how far down from the top does the clip/slot need to be?  I know it depends on which clips.  I know you want it just a big snug so you pull the top down on the apron. Just looking for any tips or ROT on this install.

Hi, you be fine with that.

It's easy to run a groove down the length of the aprons with a table saw, which is why you often see it done that way. But using a biscuit joiner in selected locations works fine, too. I've done both and it makes no difference.

When I use the z-clamps from Rockler, I place the clamp on the bottom surface of the top and place a mark on the rail where the mortise will go. I want the clamp to have a good bit of tension once screwed down. I am SUPER careful to not drill through the table top while I predrill the holes for the clamp screws. I always put a blue tape “flag” on the drill bit. I judge the spacing for the clamps based on how flat the top is. More clamps if I have to take some bow out.

I just finished some testing along those lines.  Just not sure what 'snug' really means.  As it stands now, I set the Domino fence height to 25 and then add a 2mm spacer.  It seems to be good and once I have them on all 4 sides, there should be no movement.

It works just fine, I've done it many times. I used a biscuit joiner with the metal, commercially available  ones for years. Then I got into making the clips from the same wood as the rest of the project. The Domino seems to work better there.
If I remember right, the first time I used this technique was when I forgot to saw the slots in and it was already assembled? Had to adapt.

I’ve used this method too. Mortise made with the domino as shown below.

It may never be an issue, especially if you have a lot of them on there, but those clips would be much stronger if the grain went the other direction. As they are "in theory" the tongue could split along the grain lines.

Dominos work as well
