video showing how to make a rustic mantel with the 850 planer

finished picture  please note I own 3 festools vacs, that day 2 were at another job site and the 3rd I did not have the larger hose to fit on the planer, and this was made at my shop so I can make a mess if I so choose !  lol

but with the dust collection most of that would have been sucked up.. I was showing how to make this type of look on the mantel. I have made 9 mantels tops with this blade and planer and they really come out nice and customers love them and so do I.

I was worried that you where going to hit your power cord when running the 850  [scared]

Looks great!

Did you leave your radio on a job site?  I didn't hear any rock music at the start of the video.  [poke]

lol you the man Kreg, i always wondered how you were supposed to use those blades for effect. Was there some kind of manual with them or the planer that explained this procedure?

Besides the obvious , "how not to use tools without DC on cancerous wood" and "how not to have a 1 day old OF2200 look"  [scared] lol, The end result is still there. Now i need their planer as well, thanks allot  [mad]

my latest video on how to make a rustic mantel with the 850 planer and the undulating blade

Pretty neat effects. I've got an HL-850. I'll have to remember that technique for something similar. It did seem like you were bumping around quite a bit with that undulating plane blade. Did you notice any wear and tear on the blade?

Yeh - great ... I have no need for finishes like that. I only have the baby Festool planer (EHL65) ... Now I also need to eBay my bigger Hiachi planer and get the big Festool planer and some of these interesting effect blades.

Bugger ... no idea when I'm going to use them - bloody Kreg !

(I'm still only just coming to terms with te fact that blue belt sanders are inferior and I need to eBay my Bosch beltie and replace it with a very similar Festool)

When I first bought this set up to do a mantel I did it the way I thought or was done just run planer in long runs. Nope f'd it all up. So I did the bump effect as shown. And it works great. I have made 7 now

The planer was not bumping around I was making it do that.

The blade is fine no wear. But once you do one it actually real easy. And then send it out and they look great. And a great look for coffee tables. Builtins tops. Cabinet door faces.
If its undulated to much just sand more.

Thanks for comments. Better order planer and blade now before they are out due to the popularity of my video. Call now and we will double the offer !  Just pay separate shipping and handling. !!  Lol

Well Kreg,

I have been making a list of tools to sell that I dont use inorder to buy another festool that I will use. It looks like I just found the festool I will use.

Thanks for the video.

Liked the video. Cheers.

Just wondering if this could be one situation where the interface pad for sanding comes in really handy? It would help to float the sander in and over the troughs.

Kreg what house comes with a ceiling fireplace? It must be difficult to keep the coals where they belong! Or is it possible that the picture is rotated 90 degrees? Nice looking mantle.

That's funny. Here we are as a society rushing headlong into the future with science and technology while at the same time trying to cling to objects of a simpler time. I'd have expected that this hand hewn axe effect would be very popular and it appears so.

Well, it's time for me to go. My smartphone just reminded me that it's time to take a break from the computer and go down to the workshop where I'll use my high end table saw to emulate some hand carved matchsticks.  [laughing]

i just swapped out the video with the new one I made today wearing safety glasses and also including the finish product... so watch it again.

I liked the first one better.  [big grin]
Thanks, I would have done what you did the first time and run the planer straight along.
What happens if you tilt the planner slightly does it give you some uneven troughs?
Tim
BTW, can anyone turn that photo?

Hi Kreg,

I liked the original video better. I knew "The PC Festool safety and dust extraction police" would get you in the end [big grin]

I have seen the 850 at my dealers but never seen the results of the special heads, they also do a coarse and fine wavy head. Thanks for sharing the video.

I make mantle tops like this from time to time but still do it the old fashioned way with an adze, not as high tech but gets the job done.

Keep doing the videos I love em!

Here you go Tim these are the two I stoled off his JLC post and had to rotate

I should have known he had pics there. I should've checked JLC out first.

Then you would of had twice the neck pain. I had to download them off the site, edit them and repost them. I'm not sure why it happens to Kreg, but we will get it figured out.

Like this.  I have some milled oak for a fireplace drying under a tarpaulin - the edges are crude as they are cut with a chainsaw, but they are clearly machine made.  I was wondering if I'd have to buy an adze and wallop it a few times - which would probably look awful!

here is another one I just finished, except for several more coats of laquer

and again I spent about 1 hour planning and sanding and staining... customer loved it ! this is part of a bookshelf wall 9' and 6' on left, double built ins by fireplace, new mantel, hang tv, add design trim to tv area, hang 2 sets of french doors and make a upper transom, and just added paint living room (i told them the mustard color walls had to go it does not make my work look excellent and so they are letting me paint the living room the color I choose ! )  how is that for influence   finished pics of room shortly

I have received 12 emails from guys who have already went out and bought the planner and the rustic undulating head or the just the undulating head, since they have the planner. who saw the video...

several have got back to me already and had very good success.

it just add the wow factor to my jobs.

and now since i am the  www.builtinking.com  (my new domain name I just bought that forwards to my kregscustomcarpentry website...)

time to do another mantel

Kreg:
The guys at This Old House are even useing your "technique".
I saw them (Bedford Project) make some rustic beams from some old planks with the 850... seems the Festools are back on This Old house...Tommy was using either a RO 125 to clean up some old boards and a TS 55 or 75 to trim the edge.
