Well, Christmas is around the corner and I was thinking of checking on having my dad's vintage bicycle from his childhood restored. Have any of you ever had work like that done and, if so, where/who did it for you? Would prefer a place on the east coast near Virginia since that's where the bicycle is located.

Otherwise, time to do some research on the web, but thought I'd hit the group up for some feedback/advice.

Thanks,
Shane

Shane,
Just saw a shop in Boston, Ma on this week's This Old House. You might also want to contact Rick Dale in Las Vagas.

1950's vintage. I don't know the exact year.

Yeah, I checked Rick Dale's website...  [jawdrop] $3800. I could buy three Kapex for that!  [scared]

I'm sure I could get the paint and chrome done locally. I'm more interested in where to find things like a replacement seat, which is falling apart with rust, and other things that are specific to the bike that will need to be repaired or replaced.

Mike Wolfe from the "American Pickers" TV show is a vintage bicycle buff. You might try sending him an email.

The best has got to be "Duck Dynasty"
It's like Beverly Hillbilly's in reverse.

Hi there,
Go to www.thecabe.com. This is a forum for vintage bike collectors ( like me) they are super helpful and knowledgeable and will point u in the right direction for parts, repair, contacts.
Good luck!

Buy him a new carbon fiber bike instead.

It's not about having a bike. It's unlikely that it would ever ride it. It's the sentimental value since it was his bike when he was a kid. A new carbon fiber bike wouldn't quite be the same.  [wink]

Unfortunately, all of the places I contacted said they would have time to get it done in time for Christmas. So, maybe a Fathers Day project.

Thanks for all of the feedback.

I keep going back to this thread expecting to see a picture or two  [sad]

Kev,

I thought I had posted that I'm not going to be able to get it done. I couldn't find a place to do the paint in time. So, it looks like this has turned into a future gift/project.

Ahh - sorry Shane  ... lazy me was just scrolling for links or pics.

I have a thing for bikes and sometimes just spend ages looking at pics  (yeh, pretty sad) ... I goof about looking at sites like this http://velobase.com far too often [embarassed]

You can still do the project so it's ready for birthday or farthersday  [tongue] instead of leaving it to late again  [poke]
