I do this anyway because I don't like the idea that even an unseen part will not be finished - I hadn't realised the implications for warping (thanks for pointing it out - I am stupid enough to have overlooked it even after this long thread!)

I really appreciate all the help everybody has contributed in this thread.

I have ordered the book "Understanding Wood" that Jack recommended - it looks really interesting.
