This chair is made from clear VTG western red cedar. I used all darker pieces and arranged them to showcase the natural beauty of this wood. The entire chair was constructed using the Festool domino system with no mechanical fasteners employed. When the chair was complete and sanded to 220, 4 coats of General Finishes exterior 450 semi-gloss were applied via hvlp.

At first the thought of putting each individual tenon into a matching mortise for each slat (4 mortises for each piece that’s 120 mortises just for the seat and backrest, that all have to be pretty much perfect and all of them are on a curve!) was a bit overwhelming but honestly after a little layout it wasn’t all that tough. I wanted to see how far I could push the domino and it passed with flying colors.[attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3][attachimg=4]

That is a really nice-looking chair.  Got to ask, though, if you considered using the sipo mahogany dominoes or not?  I'm guessing that this was intended as an outside-usage chair, right?

I did end up using the sipo dominoes. The pic above was just taken during a dry fit. I was awaiting the outdoor dominoes in the mail and just happen to snap this pic with the other ones in there.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!! Sure does feel nice when your peers appreciate the work you do. so yes this chair is sold but I plan on making several more, hopefully many many more as it has received great interest in the very few times I have shown it off. Actually this is the first forum I have posted it on. I posted it on instagram and on my Facebook and it seems to be a hit. Funny thing is that this chair kind of is an accident! I got a batch of lumber from my source and I had a bunch of this darker wood which is not what I wanted for the project I had planned. So instead of crying over it I figured I'd build a prototype out of it. I never even did a sketch on paper or anything.I had a basic idea of what I wanted in my head and I Just kinda kept building and tweaking till I thought it was right. The closer I got to completion the more compliments people were giving around the shop so i figured what the heck I better put a nice finish on this and see what people think. It's incredible what U can do if your not afraid to mess up. Cedar is getting expensive but I just looked at this build as practice and wasn't concerned about mistakes.. I wish I could build every project that way....

First, [welcome] to the FOG.

That chair is simply amazing! I am anxious to see more of your work... PLEASE?!

[big grin]

I'll take 8 please [big grin]

Well done! Very clean.

and [welcome]

Kev.

Forgot to ask - what glue did you use with the sipo dominos?

[attachimg=4][attachimg=4][attachimg=2][attachimg=3]Well the chair does have a table to go with it. Also built entirely with the domino is this patio lounge table that I decided would look nice with a sunken garden in the middle. So I added one! I used blue fescue because the unorganized chaotic beauty of this grass breaks up the otherwise straight lines of the top. An added benefit is the blue against the red cedar coloring is stunning. Viewed during a California sunset this table really comes alive.
