I think the whole thing is about communicating your needs (and desires) in the right way at the right time.
I avoid suggesting that we buy anything new when the credit card bill has just arrived but always mention how much easier it would be to do stuff in the workshop with a new X, Y or Z just after presenting SWMBO with the new chest of drawers that she wanted. This is exactly how the Domino was secured !
