What holds the DF 500 Connectors in

I am looking at purchasing the DF 500 connector kit.

However, from the videos, I don't actually see anything that keeps the pieces "locked in".  It looks like they just friction fit.

Is this the case?  How strong is the connection? 

Also, does the connection tighten down as you install the set screw?

As you wind the metal post into it's mating part, that part flares out inside the hole, similar to how a masonry bolt works. The other side of the connection is a frction fit, but as the set screw is wound firm it won't pull out due to the shape of the pieces.

Will they hold the panels together as well as a few 50mm 8g screws? No. But they are miles ahead of the usual cam action connectors they're designed to compete with.

Furthering on from my above comment, when using the through connectors (ie a X or T joint opposed to the L) the rods have a male and female thread that will engage inside the mortise. Biggest piece of advice I can offer here is that when using panels thicker than 18mm the plastic parts don't touch each other on the inside of the mortise. Don't over tighten here otherwise the plastic will pull through. Finger tight plus 1/2 turn with the allen key is ample.

Don't overtighten the connector threaded mating pins, they will snap. Ask me how I know... ...wasn't a problem to fish it out of the hole for replacement though.  Only snapped one, at least now I know how hard I can't tighten them, was trying to go the full turn for the mating side of the pin and went too far...
