what i made for my new transit custom van over xmas

Very nice, congrats on the work. Nice, clean finish to it too. Looks like you have planned it for it to be adaptable and last a long time.

Nice pocket hole work too. Jig or machine? How easy/hard did you find the build?

That's awesome.  I have been working on that exact project for 3 weeks now.  Yours looks amazing.  Great work

well it took some time to work the best height to make it, to get the most systainers in. pocket hole jig was used and it took about 2 full day to make and half a day to fit it in the van.

thanks floor guy it took a long time to work it out but I'am very please with how its work out.

Very nice, let us know how the drawers hold out. I know festool state something about them not being suitable for use in vehicles but I'm thinking of buying a few sets of them for the same purpose.

Nice job ,like the way you've made the sides up as panels was that to save weight ?

I made as many cut out as poss to cut down on weight, as the ply weighed quite bit. but it is good stuff and i want it to last.

That is really slick.  Nice job!

I'm curious as to why you cut openings in the side panels.  Less weight?  (Edit, I see someone beat me to my question.  So the openings are cut out of solid panels).

Thanks, Mike A.

Very nice and clean set up. Would like to know how it holds up on te long run, as stated, Festool said they should not be used in vans.

Great job. I too wonder why they aren't recommended in vehicles.  The plastic would be a little lighter than wood ones.

My guess is cold and bouncing. The plastic will be more brittle when cold.

I do not think Festool has spoken about it, but I suspect it has to do with crash survivability.  A systainer full of tools is heavy at rest, and even more so in a rapid deceleration like an accident.  If the sustainers get loose, they could become a danderous missile.

Just my guess...

Looks great Sam, nice job.

Personally I don't think the plastic catch is strong enough & would be concerned that a heavy systainer could force a drawer open particularly with the momentum of say cornering sharply.
When I get round to mine I'd probably fit something like a turn button to the frame on the opposite side to the catch http://www.screwfix.com/p/turn-button-cabinet-catch-brass-38mm-pack-of-10/21220 something quick & easy to use that would give peace of mind when the next idiot causes me to swerve as he had more right to the road than I

Looks nice! And I like the way you removed material to  lighten it up. It seems very well designed, so I'm impressed that you did it in such a short amount of time.

Hi Sam

That looks like a very neat piece of work - well done.

In other threads (and in this one above) it has been suggested that the cold could affect the strength of the plastic parts. Someone has also speculated that the catches might not be suitable for mobile use.

Could I ask you to let the FOG community know your experiences after using the system in your van for a few months?

Many thanks.

Peter

I think the vehicle issue may be that the ball bearings in the runners may come out.I have never heard of it happening but i noticed there is a warning sticker stating NOT FOR MOUNTING PERMANTLY IN WORK VEHICLES on all the metal toolboxes down at the local tool store and the rep said it was because of the slim chance of the ball bearings coming out when shaken about in a work vehicle.

Oh well another theory to ponder, but the best bet I think will be the reports from those who use them in vehicles anyway I guess.
